Do you wish to debug?
      #48742 - Tue Mar 09 2004 03:46 PM

I get this error a lot even after I have ticked Disable script debugging and unticked Display a notification about every script error.

The other problem is that even though I set these options they keep getting lost and not just after a Windows Update. It happens virtually every day and sometimes even without a reboot.

I saw in Web User about another option that can (or should) be changed but I can't find the magazine with the article any more. I tried it at the time but had to revert because I found certain things didn't work. I'm struggling to remember what didn't work but I think is was online banking.

Run MSconfig and check the Startup tab. Make sure you disable MDM.EXE which is the debug manager responsible for this. Hint, if you ever update or repair/reinstall MS Office, this always gets reactivated as part of what it does after inserting the Office CD.

There is some more information about MDM.exe here. It appears you may need to change a registry entry to get rid of it.

I don't have an MDM.EXE in startup nor is there an MDM.exe process running. These are the startup programs all of which are ticked:
WksSb.exe
NvCpl.dll
nwiz.exe
avgcc32.exe
NeroCheck.exe
realsched.exe
qttask.exe
daemon.exe
CTHELPER.EXE
UpdReg.EXE
ADGJDet.exe
ctfmon.exe
msmsgs.exe
OSA9.EXE
wkcalrem.exe
OSA.exe
WiseUpdt.exe

This is a Windows XP Home system with MS Office 97 and MS Works and MS Visual Studio.

found this about CTHELPER :-

Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. Unfortunately, as with many other Creative background tasks in these pages, there are often problems with CTHELPER. The most common complaint is random excess CPU utilization, up to 100% ! We have also had complaints of PCs freezing when CTHELPER is around, although that is probably also 100% CPU utilization. Additionally, on PCs running Intel’s Pentium 4 Hyper-Threading CPUs, the sound stutters. In short : CTHELPER is far more trouble than it is a help. Disable

also ;-

OSA.EXE
Microsoft Office’s Office Startup Application. Present in Microsoft Office 97, 2000, and XP where it is called OSA9.EXE. According to Microsoft, OSA enables Microsoft Office programs to start faster. It is our view, however, that most Microsoft background programs whose purpose is to enable you to "do something" faster, are a total utter waste of time and, worse, they also sometimes have extremely irritating side-effects which completely negate their supposed benefits (such as the annoying and infamous FindFast).

Recommendation :
Delete or disable

i suggest you run hijack this and delete these.

I suggest you also disable these, which aren't needed:
realsched.exe
qttask.exe

Disable these then run them manually when you actually use them:
WiseUpdt.exe
msmsgs.exe

What are these for?
daemon.exe
UpdReg.EXE
ADGJDet.exe

adgjdet.exe = creative soundblaster
daemon.exe = joystick controller (i think)
updreg.exe = a registry updater, you can disable this one as well.

Thanks Bricat, wondering why anyone would want or need a registry updater though?
