where are they kept
      #4852 - Tue Aug 05 2003 11:47 AM

Hi i need to know where in windows are your dial up details kept.

I know that you can find them in control pannel. But i'm trying to get the info from my old hard disc to transfer on to my new machine. The machine is dead but the hard disc works fine i just cannot find the pesky username password and dialup number.

Launch My Computer and navigate to Network and Dial-up Connections (It may be known as Dial-up Networking on your version of Windows). Rename any existing connections on the new hard drive that have the same name as the connection on the old hard drive computer. eg, if you have freeserve on both hard drives, call your connection on your NEW hard drive, freeserve1, by right clicking it and clicking Rename

On your old hard drive,
Go to Start | Run
Type in regedit
In the Left pane, fine the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess

With that key highlighted, go to File | Export to a file named DUNCOPY.REG on a floppy disk.

Transfer DUNCOPY.REG to the new hard drive and launch it.

When you reopen the Network and Dial-up Connections folder on the new hard drive, the transferred dial-up connections should appear on the target machine. They will not work at first, because the modem information comes from the source machine. Right-click each one, choose Properties, and select the correct modem. You should now have a working copy of your dial-up connections.

Thanks for your help.

Will i have to turn the computrer off and set the old HD as Master and boot directly from that. Or is there away i could boot up from the old. While still running my XP Harddisc as thats whats running at the moment.
The old HD has Win 98 running and the New has XP Pro

I would suggest that you temporarily replace the old hard drive as a Primary Master Drive, remove it when you're done and put back your NEW drive. It will be quicker in the long run than messing with the boot.ini file, imho

Don't forget to save it to a FLOPPY disk
