Hi. My son's desktop, running Windows XP 5.1, SP3, has contracted a virus. I downloaded the HJT installer (tried all 3 recommended mirrors) but the virus won't let me install HJT! What do I do now? The virus has (I think) installed something it calls "Antivirus Pro 2010" which it tries to run often. Also a companion "Advanced Virus Remover" program, with a clever icon that mimicks the Windows 4-color logo in the shape of a shield. Virus has also changed the desktop background, removing the image that was there and replacing it with a large black warning box: "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED" and "It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss." Lots of pop-ups warning of infections. Anyway, I need your help with getting HJT to install and run. I have it installed on another computer here at home -- can I just copy & paste it? Thanks in advance, Piana Tuna

After you have downloaded COMBOFIX to your DESKTOP you may have to right click on it and choose RENAME and change it's name to COMBO-FIX.EXE
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
- Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
- Close any open browsers.
- WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
- Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
- If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log (If you can get HJT to run) for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
-------------------- IF I HAVE SAVED YOU MONEY, PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING A DONATION TO HELP IN MY FIGHT AGAINST MALWARE.
When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to look like a nail.

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.
It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
Quote:
Killall::
File:: c:\windows\system32\wingenocx.dll C:\hpbyv.exe
Folder:: c:\program files\Protection System c:\program files\AntivirusPro_2010
Rootkit:: c:\docume~1\ab\LOCALS~1\Temp\efipsk.sys
Driver:: efipsk
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again.(it may ask you to reboot your computer)
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
Please copy and paste the ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply please and let me know how it is running.
*Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall*

Hello again. When I ran ComboFix this time there was a message saying that a newer version was available, but I did not download it. Didn't want to rock the boat.
The computer is running much better -- Thank you! No more pop-ups and the Nasty Notice on the desktop is gone.
I am concerned that when I click on Start --> All Programs, I still see a floder labeled 'Antivirus Pro 2010' and 2 options in that folder: 'Antivirus Pro 2010' and 'Uninstall' but when I go to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs, Antivirus Pro does not show up on the list. How can I get rid of it safely? This is not a program I installed -- I assume the virus did.
Below are the 2 report logs you asked for, both were run today (Sunday)
Thanks again, Piana Tuna

navigate to :-
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
you can delete the orphaned entry for Antivirus Pro 2010 there.
that looks clean now, just some tidying up to do.
combofix cleanup.
Time for some housekeeping
- Click START then RUN
- Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
- Delete the following:
- ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
- VundoFix backups, if present
- The C:\Deckard folder, if present
- The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings. Hide file extensions, if required. Hide System/Hidden files, if required. Reset System Restore.
Then :-
Download and scan with CCleaner - CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
- Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
Then select "Cookies" Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.
- Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section. • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section. • Clean all entries in the "System" section. • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section. • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section. • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it. • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section. • Clean any others that you choose.
- Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
- A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
- Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
- Click "exit" when done.
then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.
to help speed up your system.
then let us know how the computer is running.
HOW DID I GET INFECTED

Sorry to report that when I go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs "Antivirus Pro 2010" is not there. But it still shows up when I click on Start --> All Programs. Hmmm... Could the folder be "hidden"?
I had better luck with deleting ComboFix. That seems to be gone.
We use C Cleaner regularly.
I defragged twice. It "looks" much better now.
The computer works much better, EXCEPT that my son reports that when he tries to play any 'graphics intensive' game or program, the machine locks or freezes up. Examples: Civilization IV, Cave Story, Steam (a program that runs other games, like Half Life, Gary's Mod, Counter Strike Source, etc.) About 30 seconds to a minute into the game or program, there is no response from mouse or keyboard.
But I have not had any problems when connecting to the internet or just running simple spreadsheet programs here locally.
Thanks again for all your help. Any further thoughts? Piana Tuna

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Better now, I think. At least, Antivirus Pro 2010 does not appear in the Start menu!
However, the mouse and keyboard just froze when I tried to save a small document in Word just now.
Have not had a chance to test "intense games" yet -- that is my son's department!
Here is the log from MBAM:

Sorry for the extreme delay in replying. My son has given up on using this machine and has switched to another. The computer freezes when he tries to run certain games ("Cave Story", "World of Goo", etc.) which require a lot of RAM. It also freezes when he tries to access his account at "STEAM" -- an online gaming portal, of sorts.
Now I am trying to use the machine as a back-up. I have trouble with it during certain operations when running MS Excel and/or MS Word 2003 (version 11.5604.5606). When I click on "File" in the Menubar, and wait for the dropdown menu to expand, the whole computer locks up. This happens very consistently.
Here's the most recent HJT log:

In Control Panel, when I click on "System" it says: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz 2.81 GHz, 1.00 GB RAM
running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Just now I was trying to update my AVG to version 9 and it froze (3 times) during the download process!

that should be sufficient.
we'll have a look in the event viewer to see if we can find what is causing the freezing.
How to View Event Details
1. Go to Start, Run and type in eventvwr.msc /s click OK 2. In the console tree, expand Event Viewer, and then click the log that contains the event that you want to view.( Application log,Security log,System log )
3. In the details pane, double-click the event that you want to view. (have a look at all of them.)
look for any ERRORS. double click on any ERROR that corresponds timewise with the computer freezing, this will open the dialogue box.
The Event Properties dialog box containing header information and a description of the event is displayed.
To copy the details of the event, click the Copy button, then open a new document in the program in which you want to paste the event (for example,Notepad), and then click Paste on the Edit menu.
copy the error details and post them back here.

There are about a dozen more from October, and zillions from September, especially early Sept when the nasty virus started popping up. How many do you want to see?
Under the Application tab, the most recent event is from 9/8/09:

Then there are a host of them on 9/6, 9/5, 9/4, 9/2 etc. and earlier. I can post more if you want to see them....
Thanks again, Piana Tuna

this looks like a hardware problem, do you have a printer, external hard drive, or any other hardware plugged into the computer ? if you have unplug them one at a time and monitor it, see if the error comes back with them unplugged. it is probably a faulty driver, so removing and reinstalling the software should fix it.
also right click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES. click on HARDWARE and then DEVICE MANAGER. expand the categories one at a time, look for any errors, especially about the video controllers.you may need to update a driver.
