BBC licence

I wish to take issue with the comments of Gordon Vernon, in WebUser Issue 226.

First he states 'too many people do not regard the BBC as an essential service'. I for one strongly disagree with his opinion and I suspect that many others will too. If I had to decide to pay for the BBC or a commercial channel it would be the BBC everytime.

Second he asks 'why can't the BBC accept advertising' and quotes some areas where it does. This is an old argument pursued by one politcal party and advertising fims who are keen to get there grubby hands on an extra revenue stream. The BBCs main channel is the one place where you can get away from the blasted annoying 'compare the ....', car insurance, and now gold buying adverts.

In these days when everyone under the sun is trying to part you from you hard earned cash the BBC provide a quiet oasis of generally good quality programmes.

TV ads drive me mad. Aside from the fact that you are pounded with relentless car insurance, car and mobile phone ads, recently we have noticed a massive increase in the ad breaks. A programme on Virgin 1 at 10 had one around 10.10. Another at 10.18, another at 10.26, the next at 10.39 and finally one around 10.50. One of the breaks was five minutes long.

Sky One have taken to sticking two advert breaks into half hour shows like The Simpsons where there used to be just one.

I understand Virgin are one of several companies now looking to insert ads into the normal ad free 'Catch Up' and TV on Demand services.

Sometimes the Beeb lets itself down with overpaid 'stars' and the occaisonal political bias but, sorry, we tend to end up there more often than not. And strangely enough as so many channels seem to switch to ads at the same time, they tend to lose us as viewers to the Beeb just by the fact they show adverts.

Add into the mix the sheer range of radio and I do think it represents good value. A few salary trimmings here and there would not go amiss, mind.

I agree the BBC is excellent value for money. I don't begrudge a penny of the license fee, which I pay monthly by DD, and only three more years to go and I will get it free...woohoo!!!! The quality of the dramas and documentaries are second to none and the envy of the world. You only have to go abroad and watch their TV for a while to realise how good the BBC is. As FR said, you also get radio and iPlayer plus all the news, web and TV, programmes, it's got to be a bargain!
