Hi - long time no post! I'd be grateful for any advice please.
My XP Machine threw a blue screen error message at me which suggested a reboot after a Windows Update was applied on Sunday. However upon re-booting the whole system ran extremely slow. A number of other issues have since emerged -
- unable to perform a system restore to an earlier date - can access safe mode but again rendering of the home page is extremely slow - a chkdsk threw up numerous corrupted and unreadable sectors which the system now reports as fixed or deleted - I have since done a repair install of XP (which I know has worked as Safe Mode now shows the version as SP2 rather than SP3) - but again start up remains slow. - normal start up fails before the XP splash screen is shown leading to repeated reboots. - Good news is that all my data seems to be in place and accessible in Safe Mode so it's being archived off to a separate HD
So - does anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve this - or indeed the cause? I am minded to do a clean install, run the Win 7 upgrade advisor, make necessary changes and then upgrade the OS. But I don't want to go down that route if it's likely to be a hardware problem even though there is no obvious evidence as POST reports all is normal.
As ever - thanks in advice for you help
Andy

This may be stating the obvious, but it seems likely that your HDD needs replacing. If you haven't already done so, you can check the health of your drive by downloading the free utility HDTune which can be found at http://www.hdtune.com/. It will also check the drive for errors.

Thanks but it isn't the HDD. I decided on a complete reformat and clean install of XP which has solved the problems so I can only assume that part of the OS had corrupted. Also makes driver updates ahead of an upgrade to Win 7 a little easier.
Cheers.
