Verify your version
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Note: Don't forget to uninstall the old one (unless it was uninstalled during the new install) and also UNcheck any unwanted toolbars/programs if offered.

I think you have explained this before ourstanley but why is it that

Verify your version link says that I have Update 16, which I do, and that it is the latest version, are they just slow to update the checker?

They're notoriously slow at updating their own web pages especially the verify page.
Go to Control Panel>Java>General tab>About
Version 6 Update 17 (build 1.6.0_17-b04) if you have the latest update.
