My dughter's laptop (running Vista home premium and AVG free) wont let any web addresses be viewed on her browser (IE, Firefox or Safari) instead it just has this slirsredirect posted and the standard 'cannot display webpage' screen. I've tried running Malarebyte but it just hangs... help!

Welcome to the Webuser forum.
There's nothing showing in your HJT log.
Try this :-
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Internet Options. 3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button. 4. Click the View Files button. 5. Press CTRL+A to select all files. 6. Press DEL or click the Delete option at the top of the window. 7. Click the Yes button on the dialog box that appears. 8. After all the files are gone, close the window. 9. Click OK two times. 10. Close Control Panel.
Verify that the Use a Proxy Server check box is clear To view this check box, start Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools (or View) menu, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings for LAN, DSL, and cable modem users. If you use a dial-up modem, click the dial-up connection on the Connections tab, and then click the Settings button.
Let me know how you go.

Thank you for your welcome, the laptop is running Vista (which I'm not used to, but I think your step-by-step is for XP? Try as I might... I've got lost trying. Can you try again?
Thanks

Ok, done that now.
Not all temporary files would delete however. 12off remain there even if I try to delete them.
These are: http://config.messenger.msn.com/Config/M...809&....... http://stc.asp.msn.com/coi-uk/messengercentral/I/1/tabicons/icon_msgr8.5.png http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyners/3DF0FF3A-....... http://www.my6gfx.co.uk/banners/2005_07_..... Cookie:xxxxxx@updates.digitalpersona.com/
I then checked that the 'Use a Proxy Server' option was cleared, which it was.
Checked that still unable to get any wepage to display on IE, and still can't. Skype however connects ok and works Hope that helps?
Thanks

Boot up in SAFE MODE with networking
and try this :-
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)- Once installed, update the program definitions when prompted.
- Click the "Preferences" button and then the "Scanning Control" tab.
- Under "Scanner Options" make sure the following are checked/selected:
- 1>> Close browsers before scanning.
- 2>> Scan for tracking cookies.
- 3>> Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
- 4>> Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP.
- Deselect all other scanning options.
- Close SUPERAntiSpyware for use later.
while still in safe mode :-
Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the "Scan your computer" button.- On the left, select "C:\Fixed Drive".
- On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose "Perform Complete Scan".
- Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
- After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click "OK".
- Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click "Next".
- After quarantining anything found, you may be prompted to reboot, click "Yes".
- Paste the scan log in your next reply (Preferences > Statistics/Logs tab > double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log)

Thanks for your reply.
I can startup in Safe mode ok (with networking) but the next bit is a stumbling block... when I open the IE browser, and enter www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?...... it hits the same problem as before, it wont display the webpage to download the antispyware. It just says 'Done' in the bottom left of the IE window and displays the normal message ' Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'
I can download the file onto my laptop, put onto CD and load that into her laptop and install, but then I still can't update it for the latest updates as I still can't use IE to do so
Is it worth running it as you suggest, but without it being updated? Or any other suggestions?
Thanks

try downloading and installing hostsexpert, if you get it installed try superantispyware again, but DO NOT reboot your computer otherwise the redirects will stop you again. if you can't get hostsexpert to install, try running superantispyware without the updates.
Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager. [list] Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home Click on "File Handling". Click on "Restore MS Hosts File". Click OK on the Confirmation box. Click on "Make Read Only?" Click the X to exit the program.

HostsXpert loaded ok and I did as instructed. Internet access now not possible at all though. wireless connection to router ok with excellent signal but no connection to the net. just shows as Unidentified network (name) and Access: Local only.
I've run SuperAntispyware (without being able to run updates obviously) and it scans for about 2 hours before coming to file c:\windows\winsxs\msil_presentationbuildtasks_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_99e9ba84......\presentationbuildtasks.dll and then hangs with the time elapsed just counting away. The cancel, pause next buttons when clicked bring up the are you sure you want to cancel as the scan is not finished pop-up, but if you click yes it still doesn't exit, even the X on the window doesn't close it and you have to turn it off and reboot. Also, now it will only boot in safe mode even if you select normal

do you have any other computers connected to the router ? if so, are they working ok ?
if there are no other computers connected to the router we might try reseting the router in case it has been hijacked. you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE
let me know if it connects to the net ok.

Running msconfig and setting back to normal windows (not safe mode) has brought back the internet connection and Skype. Browser still as was though.

the problem is, i can find a lot of people with the same problem but nobody has found a fix for it yet.
try this :-
Rerun HJT,and put a checkmark beside these :-
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3...n&pf=laptop R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3...n&pf=laptop R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3...n&pf=laptop R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file) O2 - BHO: AOL Toolbar Launcher - {7C554162-8CB7-45A4-B8F4-8EA1C75885F9} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 5.0\aoltb.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {DE9C389F-3316-41A7-809B-AA305ED9D922} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 5.0\aoltb.dll
now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED
then follow the instructions HERE to uninstall AOL Toolbar 5.0
then reboot the computer and post a fresh HJT log.

Is the internet working ?
See if you can get this to run, even if it is in safe mode :-
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Internet connected, as in Skype is working but browser still the same, unusable.
I've installed and run Malwarebytes (downloaded on another machine and transfered by CD) but it stalls when scanning file c:\windows\winsxs\msil_presentationbuildtasks_31bf3856ad.....\presentationbuildtasks.dll in the same way that Superantispyware did and requires a reboot to clear.

see what you can find out about that file, i can't find any information on it at all.
