If the zip file is in a folder (other than a 'system' folder such as My Documents), can you move all other files from the folder and then delete the folder with the zip file still in it?

You could try the Remove on Reboot application. It adds an option on the right click menu to remove a file the next time the PC is booted.

Another alternative to try -->>Unlocker<<--

If this doesn't work, is it possible to create another zip file with the exact same contents in another folder with the same file name. Copy that file to the same location of the original and have it overwrite it.
Now try to delete it.

---or---

Recreate an empty file but with the same file name and paste into the location of the original and allow it to be overwritten. Try deleting now.

Fusion

Already tried the overwrite with a file of same name, box said file exists asked if I wanted to replace clicked ok. 1 min later box said can not move file a file with same name already exists choose different file name.

If you are 100% sure you this file is not needed or required and has been created by yourself, I would try to remove the item with a program called -->>Hijackthis<<--
It can remove files and folders on a reboot but no guarantees are offered or given

This program is a powerful tool and I urge you not to experiment with it to try and remove other items which you may think are not required.
Webuser has a specialist -->>forum<<-- to assist users with malware related problems and this tool is used under guidance from an approved malware removal specialist.
I'm not implying that this file is malware, but pointing out that a function of this tool has the capability to remove files or folders which may have been created by malware and of course the capability to remove other files and folders that are not. Either way, removing the wrong files can render a machine useless.

NOTE:
Please look at this link . . . -->>Delete a file on reboot<<-- which shows you how to navigate to and remove a file via the Hijackthis interface.

If you are unsure about using this tool, don't use it.

I removed a stubborn old file by first renaming it in Unlocker and then using Unlocker to delete it. Must be worth a trial.

I ran the Hijackthis programme as you said no explanation at all and file still there so did it again to be sure same thing.

Doublell
Unlocker could not rename nor delete the file reason given error because of Cyclic Redundancy Check

This file is not bullet proof its bomb proof.

The file may be on a "bad spot" on the hard drive which makes it inaccessible to open, copy, move or delete.

Try running chkdsk /r from a Command Prompt (which will probably require a reboot to run) and see if that fixes the problem.

If you Google 'deleting stubborn files' you will find a number of sites offering different solutions. This is just one of them. Quote:stubborn file deletion often is as much art as science.

This site gives a simple explanation of cyclical redundancy check that I could understand.

Well done Mike

Ran chkdsk/r as you suggested took about 45 minutes and there was a few file segments unreadable, after it had done its stuff the awkward file had gone from 697,876 bytes to 0 and it deleted with no trouble, I wont miss it that's for sure.

Thanks again
