Cleaning Old Coins

Can anyone give me some tips on how to clean up some old coins please, thanks.

Citric acid (which is the acid in fruits) is very effective. If you have a "home wine making" shop locally, get a little tub of citric acid crystals, dilute in water and leave the coins in the solution for an hour or so.

personally i wouldn't clean old coins, you usually devalue them once you clean them, because you remove the lustre

Ah ye olde Brown sauce Method that takes me Back


If its a Newer coin dipping in a solution of neat Cillet Bang can restore the finish

Or try Cif/White cream cleaner which is good on the Hands (I clean 100's of things with it) Brilliant Hand Cleaner too Only No No it scratches some plastics (clear type )

You may devalue the coins by cleaning them. I would seek advice from a firm like Spink & Son, Tel. No. 020 7563 4000. They are part of the Christie's Group.
