computer crashing
      #440994 - Wed Oct 28 2009 11:17 AM

I have XP as my current operating system using Internet Explorer to to browse the web.

On some rare occasions when visiting some websites my computer crashes and then re -boots itself.

Can anyone explain to me what causes this and how do I stop it happening.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my problem and even more thanks to anyone able to explain to me how to resolve the issue.

Instead of allowing the reboot, you can make the computer stop on a BCC (Bug Check Code or informally, a BSOD) and not automatically restart when an error is encountered. Do this by right-clicking My Computer > Properties > Advanced Tab then click Settings at the bottom alongside Startup and Recovery then in System Failure remove the tick from ‘Auto Restart’. Now, when a BCC occurs, the STOP error details will be displayed on the screen. Make a note of the hexadecimal error number (the format is 0x00000aaa, where aaa is the error code, e.g. 07B). Also, there will be an error name, like INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE and the message may point to a specific file. After noting the error, you will have to manually turn off the computer, i.e. press and hold in the power button, wait 10 seconds then restart.

Look for an explanation of your error number as shown in the left pane here http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms795508.aspx

If you don’t understand the BCC error description, try the free WhoCrashed program, which is friendlier than the Windows MiniDump reader and may reveal the reason for the crash. Download it from here http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed and install it. To run it, click Analyze then scroll down to see the error(s). When it is first run, it will download the Windows Debugging package, which is perfectly normal. All minidumps found on the system will be listed. Copy & Paste the message(s) back here if you don’t fully understand it/them.
