hi
i am trying to put various dvd's (either films or tv episodes) that i own pre-recorded onto a memory stick so that i can watch them on a netbook (no dvd player) when on a flight etc.
i have tried a couple of free programs but cannot seem to do this. i am trying to convert them to mp4 as i can play them on my netbook through the vlc media player. does anyone know of a simple (preferably) free program that will do this. i am also wondering if the fact that my dvd's are original recordings, could there be protection on them that prohibits this kind of conversion?

Why not just watch the DVD through VLC media Player?
Transfer the TV episode(s) or film(s) to your Flash drive, open VLC Media Player -> Media -> Open folder -> Navigate to the Drive -> The Movie -> VIDEO_TS -> OK
The movie or TV show opens and plays for you.

won't the file size be massive? is it just a case of copying all the files onto the flash drive?

Yes the files sizes will be large but the quality is not compromised and you can get flash drives of varying sizes nowadays. >32GB< & 64GB are not uncommon and you could watch several movies on say a 24hr flight should you want to.
If the movies or TV shows are not copy protected, it's as easy as copying them onto a flash or small external drive.
However, if the movies or TV shows are copy protected, it is illegal to copy them onto another drive. If you have chosen to do this, they probably wouldn't play correctly anyway. You'd have to try but don't tell anyone.
Saying that, there are very simple methods to do exactly what you want and are available free. These programs remove any protection as a matter of course and place the 'backed up' DVD direct on to the drive of your choice..
It's your conscience you'd have to deal with as no one would know you have done it would they?
I can't condone the actions of copying protected DVDs and no doubt any links I place in this forum to 'help' you achieve your goal would be removed.
Googling for the answer in private removes pointing fingers to would be helpers and the obvious actions of the 'copier'.
