I was impressed to read that Eddie Stobart, the UK lorry company, is bringing in Spanish fruit and vegetables by rail.

"The different national rail networks [were not co-operating]..so people kept on sending their produce by lorry. Eddie Stobart has cut through the bureaucracy"

Definitely forward thinking both commercially and environmentally.

Just got to get more freight back onto our own UK railway again now!

It's a pity we have a liking for for out of season fruit and veg. The carbon footprint would be cut dramatically if we, as a population, stuck to our home grown produce and eat what is in season at the time.

Agreed. There will be a time when we return to storing our own summer's allotment crop for the winter like days gone past.

But it will take a lot of global warming before people ditch the supermarkets' imported fruit aisle..

A few years ago when i was in Spain the fruit over there tasted a lot better than the stuff in the local supermarkets, maybe that is why I don't eat much fruit because it is tasteless.

I noticed the same thing when I was in Italy in September.

The fruit was local and seasonal - delicious. I've never tasted olives like them.. double the size of the ones you get here.
