Hi,
A couple of days ago, I recieved a reminder from WU to download and install a couple of important updates. As usual, I followed the instruction. Everything seemed to be progressing normally and updates appeared to have been installed successfully. However, just after installing these updates, I got the paint pallet in the task bar asking me to download and install the very same 2 updates once again. I complied of course, but the same thing happened again and again and again. I have since updated and run all of my security software, (Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, Avast AV and Windows defender), and, again, everything appears to be normal apart from the constant reminder to install these 2 updates yet again.
In the 'view update history' pane, everything looks normal and the updates, as I say, appear to have installed successfully. However, when I open up the 'Installed Updates' pane, there is no sign of them. I guess they haven't really installed?
My system appears to be running normally, however, there are a few things that appear to be a little strange. Can't really put my finger on it. If someone who was unfamiliar with my PC was using it, I doubt they would notice. But, and I guess most of you will know what I mean..... you just get a feeling that something's gone for a ball of chalk!
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit SP2.
Any help gratefully recieved as always,
Thanks, wired

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)
Installation date: ‎23/‎10/‎2009 11:31
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important
A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.
More information: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=128803
Help and Support: http://support.microsoft.com
As I say, in the view update history pane, it informs me that these updates have been installed successfully, (10 times now with auto update running!), however in the installed updates pane, there is no sign of them. Infact, the last successful updates before these two were on the 14th October.
One other thing that I have noticed that may or may not be relevant...... Since my last update of Malwarebytes, Windows warns me that it is blocking Malwarbytes on Start Up and I have to manually start it by giving Windows permission to run it via UAC????
Seems strange doesn't it?

Make sure that your version of Msxml4.dll file in the C:\windows\System32 folder is version 4.20.9849.0.
the known issues with these 2 files can be found :-

bri, thanks once again for your help mate. I think you've hit the nail on the head.
My version of Msxml4.dll is 4.20.9848.0 as opposed to 4.20.9849.0.
I have clicked on the 2 links you've provided for the known issues and rectification, and my head hurts. It seems a little advanced for me. Is there any possibility you can talk me through this in layman's English as opposed to the Serbo-Croat Microsoft appear to be using?
Sorry for being a dullard......

you're not a dullard, we all had to learn sometime, and with computers you are always learning.
I think the best way to go is to try a manual installation.
Go HERE
click on DOWNLOAD. then click on SAVE FILE. save it to your desktop. then right click on the file and select "run as administrator" after it installs, reboot your computer.
let me know how it goes.

Hi bri,
Sorry it's taken a couple of days to get back to you. Pretty hectic at work.
Did as you suggested mate. No joy. 430 and 833 are still showing up as needing to be installed.

Go to Start | Run type or copy the following:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll .then click OK.
Do the same with these files. Go to Start | Run Type in the following one at a time. Then click ok.
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msjava.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\jscript.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll
then try the updates again, let me know if any of these files don't register.

I'm guessing these files aren't registering?
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msjava.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\jscript.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll

I'm getting a little bit concerned now............

you shouldn't be concerned, that was my mistake, those files were for XP.sorry,
go back to the "view installed updates" and remove those 2 files. then REBOOT the computer.
now go to the link i posted earlier for the manual installation, and try installing them again.

Phew..........!
Thanks again bri, but as I say, KB941833 and KB954430 appear to have been successfully installed in the 'view update history' pane, but when I look in 'view installed updates', there's absolutely no sign of them........so, by my understanding, they haven't actually been installed and therefore there is no way to remove them???
Can I remove them from 'view update history', or would that be a waste of time as they haven't been installed anyway?
Sorry to be a pain mate, and thanks again........

this isn't really my area of expertise, as i don't have vista installed i can't really have a look for myself, your best bet would be to have a look HERE at this post in the VISTA help forum, if the suggestions by BURRWALNUT don't work, post a question there, they would be better advising you on this.
sorry i couldn't be more help.

No worries bri. Thanks for the invaluable help you've given me already.
I've been keeping an eye on that particular thread that you gave me the link to as it is, so I'll try and see if anything works there. Have also sent a request to Vista Help and Support to see if they can shed any light on the matter. Currently waiting for a reply.
I have discovered in many searches that there is a problem with these 2 updates but the advice seems to be a little contradictory in every instance. Even in Microsofts own forums.
If I eventually manage to sort it, I'll drop you a line.
Thanks again mate,
