Just recently I have been receiving a message:
"Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to 217.174.223.50:80 "
when trying to connect to a web site which I have connected to on an almost daily basis for the last couple of years. The message occurs about 30 to 60 seconds after trying to connect
Can anyone explain what it means and whether there is anything that I can do about it or is it something to do with the web site?
I have noticed that it appears to be something to do with trying to send a message using a web site's "contact us" form - the web site above is one that deals with "spam" and which has a blank form into which the spam header is pasted, Apart from being unable to send the spam header, everything else in the web site works. I now have a similar problem with the TomTom web site and although it doesn't give an error message like the one above it just doesn't connect and again this is when there is a web form to fill in and send.
I thought at first that it might be something to do with the fact that I have recently upgraded Internet Explorer but I get the same problem on a different computer which still has IE6 installed.
There are a couple of other web sites where the same thing happens.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2
Has anyone any ideas about this?

"unable to connect to 217.174.223.50:80"
I cannot open a page at the address http://217.174.223.50 although that IP address does respond to a "ping". It appears to relate to a services company based in France and, if you have the correct IP address for the site, the problem must be at their end.
TomTom's site at http://www.tomtom.com does open OK though.

Many thanks for that mgmcc. It is a company in France that deals with spam and everything in the site works apart from sending them spam that I have received when I am in France. It is the same with the TomTom site everything works apart from the "contact us" bit. I wanted to find out something about their map service so I filled in their form but it wouldn't work. it just said it couldn't connect but I suspect that it is this fsockopen thing again.
I suppose it is a question of waiting until an ISP or whoever it is, fixes the problem. It seems odd that the same problem is occurring with several different web sites.
