Have to admit I am embarrassed Big Time I have logged my Broadband Test speed on the StreetStats Map on www.top10-broadband.co.uk I stick out with the worst return in the district @ 0.9 MB download and 0.2 MB upload speeds off an AOL "1.1MB" connection I do like the clear way they have used for the comparison connection graphs .As I suspected Virgin comes out Head and Shoulders over everyone else Meanwhile AOL drags along the Bottom of the charts (with No improvement over the Long term History charts) FYI BE is shadowing Virgin but their coverage is Spotty and the Price is Slightly higher In my area the Best report is a solitary O2 connection @ 6.8 MBs Just across the Road from us Nearest cluster of Virgin BB logs are in the Wigan area (on cable) Where I live 2 miles west, how would a Non cable Virgin Connection perform? Have to look closer at the returns to see if anyone has logged 1 of these ....There was 1 connection logged @ 17.2 Mbs/0.7 Mbs ( "XL" option? )
Well worth checking out and Populating.
Be warned there is a lot of Variance. Assume 1 bad result in a Cluster to be a bad connection and disregard it. BT are the biggest sinners here

Two tests on that site's StreetStats page gave me a download speed of about 1.9Mbps - that's with a 10Mbps Virgin Cable connection!
Tests with three different servers at Speedtest.net gave 7.1, 7.2 and 7.5Mbps and I know they underestimate my actual speed.
Webuser's speed checker gives me 6.38Mbps, so I think these results need to be taken "with a pinch of salt"!

I agree There is No Accurate indication For these Have to take several tests(Different Websites) and divide to get a mean average Virgin is Higher as It has fewer hops to its server (Ditto BE) Whereas My AOL test connection has to Go to the US and return! Been different and Higher had I been living in the US? The BT Numbers cannot go to an overseas server, and yet they are showing wild swings and Very low Numbers despite claiming to be up to a 10 MBs connection!

Just ran a Another test at random (different source) www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/speed-test.asp
And my earlier return is Confirmed Quote:
Date 25/10/09 19:49:30 Download speed 936.01 Kbps (0.91 Mbps) Upload speed 233.82 Kbps (0.23 Mbps)
Did not input a Location into this test
For the record somebody a year ago at the exchange Boosted my connection speed to 6.4 MBs for about an Hour. Yet it was throttled back ... Why? No explanation This was with a Voyager 105 router. Am using a Netgear 834 Router now

Hi all
I'm Chris and I work at Top 10 Broadband.
Thanks for all your interest in our speed test. I'd like to respond to some of your questions/problems.
Since launching the new test we have been overwhelmed with traffic and media coverage. Due to the newness of our technology and variety of broadband connection types we have also had some teething problems with the service which some of you have picked up on here.
You can see a full list of issues on this page. As you can see we are cracking through them and fixing things almost every day.
The main problem that most of you are experiencing is that the speed test is under-reporting your speed compared to other speed tests. We put live an update yesterday (26th October) which we think solves this problem. I would be grateful if you could all run the test again and post your results here so we can see if things have improved.
I would like to reassure you that we are not using any data from the speed test on our StreetStats tool or speed test trends until we are confident the test is reporting speed accurately.
I hope you will try the improved speed test and let me know your feedback. Speed testing is a complex subject and we really value your ideas as broadband experts in helping us build the best tool available.
Happy speed testing! Chris

Cheers Chris No change I'm afraid 0.9 & 0.2 are still being reported As I said in earlier topics this postcode area is Notoriously slow despite being a populated zone. I have several Family & friends on AOL (Locally) And OK, reliability-wise It is adequate. Compared to the Outside world, its in the Relegation position on the speed table(Or hovering above it) When I last looked at the "Faster speed" offer @ a higher price. It was [in real numbers] the same speed with a discounted sign-up to the "Talk Talk" Telephone service, which a lot of us in the area are already using!

Morning everyone,
I just wanted to post an update on how we are calculating the download speeds:
Step 1) A small image file is downloaded from the server to estimate connection speed (50kb)
Step 2) We choose image file size based on that and the target test time from a config file (sizes vary from 50kB to 10MB)
Step 3) 2 simultaneous downloads start - current speed is calculated using total downloaded bytes (both files) divided by the download time
Step 4) The result is calculated from the current test, so if you re-test it won't calculate the average from all your tests
We're working flat-out to fix the problems with the download speed under reporting but it seems as though we've ironed out the issues with the upload speeds, so thanks for all your feedback to help us achieve this.
I'll keep you posted.
