I sent this as an email to the Inbox section but thought I'd post it here to see if anyone agrees....
Dear Editorial Staff,
Could I please make plea for a bias away from graphic design and towards readability with respect to, for example the ‘Hot topics’ sidebar in the Inbox section (p16 current issue)? Whilst this may look fine on a compositing screen, a spider-web-thin dark grey font on a medium-grey background does not make for easy reading under the less-than-incandescent lighting of a Merseyrail commuter train. I notice that, in contrast, the text in the “Subscribe” sidebar on the opposite page is soot-black on the same background and is eminently readable despite being a ‘compressed’ font… I wonder why? [ker-ching] perhaps?
Articles that are printed in a typeface that is barely discernible from their ‘arty’ background get the same reaction from me as websites exhibiting similar qualities….a heavy sigh and move on.

There are many issues regarding clarity and readability on paper and screen. Some are just an irritation, like colour clashes that make your eyes spin in their sockets, or entire paragraphs written in capitals, or in an Old English font. Having a graphic design degree might make me over-critical, but some graphical choices affect people like me with poor eyesight that lens correction doesn't correct perfectly (and having to wear bifocals doesn't help).
I generally like the way Webuser looks, but I agree with the specific points you make about the 'Hot topics' sidebar - I do find it hard to read.
