Sharing your Printer on XP/Vista Network
      #440612 - Thu Oct 22 2009 12:17 PM

I was having trouble trying to share my printer on my Windows XP desktop PC with my Vista laptop.

Not anymore. Here's how I did it.

I clicked Start, Printers and Faxes on my XP machine.

Right clicked on my printer from the list. Chose Sharing. Made a note of my Printer share name, e.g. printer6

Then clicked My Computer, My Network Places.

I made a note of my computer's name, e.g. Mr-0t5e778734

Then on my Vista laptop,

I went to Control Panel. Clicked Printer. Then Add Printer.

Chose Add a local printer. Clicked on Create a new port.
Chose the default option - Local Port.
Clicked Next.

On the dialogue box asking for port name I typed in the \\computer name\printer name So I used the information I had collected above,

\\Mr-0t5e778734\printer6

I then chose the model of my printer from the list.

Bingo I could now print from the Vista Laptop!
