Connecting a monitor to my laptop
      #440580 - Wed Oct 21 2009 08:51 PM

Hi

I purchased a new monitor to connect to my laptop today. Initially everything was fine and it worked. However, whenever I closed the laptop it wnet onto standby and the monitor went off.

After fiddling about with the settings, the monitor no longer displays the picture on the laptop or any picture at all. It just says 'out of range' across the screen. I know it's connected because during startup the images appear on the montior but then when the desktop appears on th laptop, the image on the screen disaapears and is replaced by 'out of range'.

Please help - using words of one syllable if possible as I am a computer-dunce!

Also once it's working, how do I get the set up right so that I can close the latptop whilst still having the images on the monitor?

Thank you in advance!

SS

LCD Monitors have optimal settings for "Resolution" and "Refresh Rate" and any departure from these settings can have unpredictable results. An "Out of Range" message means that the display setting (almost certainly the Resolution setting) is outside the range that the the monitor can operate with.

" how do I get the set up right so that I can close the latptop whilst still having the images on the monitor?"

If the Laptop goes into Standby when you close the lid, then obviously nothing will be displayed on either its internal screen or an external monitor. If you really want the Laptop to continue running with the lid closed (which would be unusual unless using an external keyboard and mouse too), go into "Control Panel > Power Options" where there may be settings for how it behaves when the lid is closed.
