Hello all, I have been sent an AAC file but cannot open it. I have WMP11 but it won't play and I get the impression from googling that I may need a codec for this or even a seperate program. As usual after 1 hour googling I am non the wiser. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Many thanks

Download the -->>VideoLAN Client for Windows<<-- and play the file(s).

The AAC format, amongst other things, is native to iPod/Apple. However, I believe Media Player Classic can handle them.

Thanks you guys, I did come across afterdawn site before. I have installed VLC, all I get when I play file is a 3 sec piece. Downloaded tag plug in for WMP, no joy at all there. Afterdawn site says with WMP classic you still need to have plug in to play files. It appears to me that this is a big problem for a lot of people and no one seems to have the ultimate solution, why that is I don't know. Thanks for your help and advice, seems like this one is going to be nigh impossible.
All the best, much appreciated as always.

Well, I've just downloaded and installed Media Player Classic (NOT 'WMP Classic'?) and it's played an .ACC file straight out of the box no plug-in required!?!?!?
Mind you, having downloaded an ACC (and an M4A for good measure) I find that Winamp also plays them as standard.
Of course that could be down to earlier installed codex, had the system so long I don't recall.

I've just converted several MP3 files to the AAC format and VLC plays them without a problem. If your only getting 3 seconds worth, perhaps it's only 3 seconds long. If it's possible, I'd try to contact the sender of the file, and they can verify the contents and approximate duration.
Winamp also plays them as a matter of course as TFC has stated.

TFC and Fusion, Much obliged and as usual you are right. MPC not WMP does play AAC but still only 3 secs ( that's 3 secs not free sex). This was downloaded from an O2 mobile site so there maybe a prob there. Anyway I will try to contact sender as all you get for 3 secs is the sound of a phone ringing, strange. Anyway as always many, many thanks for your time and great advice, appreciated.

Glad you clarified that, I could have been wasting the night on Google otherwise.
