outlook express emails
      #440404 - Mon Oct 19 2009 12:31 AM

one email program I use is outlook express with windows xp and I am about to get a new pc, which will have either windows vista or windows 7.

I don't want to lose my emails in outlook express and there's a lot of them.

How can I ensure that with the new pc, whether its windows vista or windows 7, that all my outlook express emails will still be there, or do I have to email every single email to a temporary other email account so's I don't lose them altogether?

Perhaps the easiest way to achieve what you want is to first create a folder on your desktop and call it say ‘OE backup emails’ and maybe include a date also.

Then open Outlook Express, and make the Window smaller so you can easily view the newly created folder icon.

Whilst in OE, and in the Inbox folder, select all via the Edit menu.
Now drag all the highlighted items into the new folder.
This method also works for all other folders such as Sent etc.
You can put this folder(s) on removable media such as CD or Flash drive and view your ‘saved’ emails in the future.

Your new system won’t use Outlook Express, but perhaps Windows mail or Windows Live Mail unless you opt for another email client. When you D/click any of the emails in the new folder on your new system, it will open up in your default email client.

I have quickly made a very -->>short video showing<<-- you how easy it is to do.

Unfortunately, Windows Live Mail (don’t even consider Windows Mail) stores the mail in a different format (separate .eml files) to that of Outlook Express (one .dbx file per mailbox), so you will have to copy then Import your mail as follows:

OLD PC
1. Go to Outlook Express > Tools > Maintenance Tab > Store Folder.
2. Make a note of its location and navigate to it. If you haven't moved it, it's here C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. You may have to show 'hidden' files in Folder Options to see it. Close Outlook Express.
3. Copy the whole Outlook Express folder (not just the .dbx files) to an external source. Remove any ‘Read only’ attributes via right-click > Properties.

NEW PC
You will have to download WLM as it’s not present with Windows 7.
4. Go to Windows Live Mail > File (press Alt if the Menu Bar is not showing) > Import > Messages, choose OE > Next > Browse to the location where they are stored and follow the wizard.

As an alternative to 2 above, you could move the mail boxes to an ‘easier-to-get-at’ location, i.e. Open My Documents and create a folder named Mail Boxes. Now go to Outlook Express > Tools > Maintenance Tab > Store Folder > Change and type the location of the new folder, e.g. My Docs\Mail Boxes. Close Outlook Express. The store location is now easier to navigate to and it is not hidden.

Windows Live Mail reads the OE mails no problem on an XP system.
With the method I have shown, the messages are converted to .eml files and can be read by Windows Live Mail.
I don't see Vista or even Windows 7 being any different.

I didn’t know the OE emails were converted to .eml format when copied, thank you for that.

It must be a change that was made to OE after WM was introduced, what, some two years ago.

I rarely use OE these days, it's only an alternative email client, but I have used the above way in the past as an additional backup method to save Outlook Express emails in the .eml format ever since I can remember.
Looking in an external backup drive which is on hand shows saved OE mails in the .eml format going back to 2001.
I'm sure if I looked in some stored archived CDs going back further, they would also be in the .eml format.

Fusion and BurrWalnut,

thank you both for your *extremely* helpful replies plus the excellent short videos which I've just watched.

I have about a week to go yet till it arrives, but it will be windows vista I've decided to get and not windows 7, but just wondering whats the hitch about windows mail? -That was one alternative email I was thinking of creating but if there's snags about windows mail please do let me know more, thanks!

Some differences between Windows Mail (WM) and Windows Live Mail (WLM):

Windows Live Mail is the newer program, and replaces Windows Mail which
comes with Vista (and won't be updated).
Both are email programs and newsreaders.

WLM has an integrated calendar which synchs with your online Live/Hotmail
calendar.
WLM can access Hotmail/Live/MSN http email accounts, which WM cannot.
WLM can synch your contacts with the online Windows Live Hotmail, if you
sign in with a Live ID.
WLM can access RSS feeds.
WLM can auto-complete typed in email addresses from the Contacts, WM only
remembers 29 typed-in addresses.
WLM has separate Inbox, Drafts, Sent items, Junk email and Deleted items
folders for each email account. WM dumps all email into one Inbox.
WLM has 37 spell check languages, WM has 4.

WM can let you view the source code when composing a message, WLM cannot.
WM has not been updated since Vista was released.

WLM and WM can now both access Hotmail POP3 accounts, since MSFT has added
that service.

If your getting a new system, Windows 7 is the newer operating system.
Some say, which of course is arguable, that Vista is one of the worst systems ever developed. I have only used it occasionally so I can't give an accurate personal opinion.
W7 is surely is the wisest choice.
