Free Space Less Not More
      #440255 - Fri Oct 16 2009 01:54 PM

I keep free space on my hard drive close to 15% so that I can always defrag. When I saw it at 14% I deleted several of the largest seldom used programs and some MP3 files and saw it go to 13% I then deleted more items and it's now at 12%. The defrag tool asks if I want to defrag anyway, and I've said yes, but nothing changes. I've rebooted and even shut down completely to reset the % indicated by the Disk Defragmenter, but it hasn't changed and remains at 12%. I don't understand why available space is less instead of more when I delete items. In the past, deleting items has always given me more space, not less. Hijackthis log follows. I've sanitized two personal web page addresses with "xxx.xxx".

Re: Free Space Less Not More [Re: Thunder]

I don't see anything in the log.

It's strange that the free space is disappearing after you delete files.

what size is your hard drive ?

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

--------------------
IF I HAVE SAVED YOU MONEY, PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING A DONATION TO HELP IN MY FIGHT AGAINST MALWARE.

When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to look like a nail.

Re: Free Space Less Not More [Re: bricat]

I don't know what happened, but running Combofix seems to have corrected the problem.

My hard drive Total size is 18.6 GB.
Before running Combofix, I had 3.05 GB free space.
After running Combo fix I now have 2.95 GB free space but the Disk Defragmenter now shows 15% free space, allowing me to defrag. Thanks for your advice.

Is there anything further I need to do? Combofix and Hijack logs follow:

just some tidying up to do.

combofix cleanup.

Time for some housekeeping

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
• When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:

    • Delete the following:
• ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
Then :-

    Download and scan with CCleaner
    1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
    2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
      Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

    3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
      In the Windows Tab:

      • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
      • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
      • Clean any others that you choose.

      In the Applications Tab:

      • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
      • Clean any others that you choose.

    4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
    5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
    7. Click "exit" when done.

    then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

    HOW DID I GET INFECTED

This morning on start-up my computer was notably slow.

I began to perform the latest tasks you provided (Combofix /u) but received a warning saying it was not safe and to download a fresh copy of Combofix. When I clicked OKAY Combofix deleted itself from my computer.

I went and downloaded a fresh Combofix to my desk top, but now it wants to run the entire program all over again, so I refused and stopped the process.

Should I run it all over again, or just proceed with the other tasks?

    Added:

I tried just running Combofix /u but warning windows opened saying I still had Antivirus software running. I closed the windows and Combofix deleted itself again.

try installing it again, let it run if need be.

then you need to make sure all of your security is disabled and try uninstalling it again.

I apologize. I didn't read past the first instruction where you said to select "2". Since I never saw any option to select from, I thought I was doing something wrong. But now, reading down further, I see that deleting Combofix was one of the tasks the command line Combofix /u was supposed to do. I guess I should read more carefully.

I already had CCleaner, so I updated, and in spite of all my efforts, I still ended up with the tool bar. The same thing happened to me when I switched my ISP from the cable company to a fiber optics line with the phone company. It took all day to figure out how to uninstall it, so I wrote it down. You might add to your instructions, "If you somehow end up with the toolbar anyway, go to "tools - toolbars" and un-check Yahoo toolbar. After that, there's a confirmation window asking if you want to disable this add-on.

CCleaner did a great job. I now have 4.34 GB or 23% available, and ran a good long defrag.

    Is there anything else?

the best way to remove it is to go to ADD\REMOVE PROGRAMS in the CONTROL PANEL and remove the yahoo toolbar from there.

that's it, at least you have a bit more space now.

    happy surfing.

Bravo, I never thought to look in add\remove programs. I was able to delete both the yahoo toolbar and the one from the pesky phone company.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th time you've pulled me out of the muck. You've saved me time, effort, money, and what I expect would be a lot of down time if I had to take my computer elsewhere for servicing. I've made a modest donation, and encourage others to do so.

    Best regards.
