Do you use a DNS server?
      #440083 - Tue Oct 13 2009 09:09 PM

Do you use a DNS server and if so which one and why?

I have been using Comodo DNS for a while now, but have read some bad reviews about it, so I switched to open DNS and then read bad reviews about that too.

Can somebody recommend a good safe DNS service to me?

Thank you for any help on this matter.

Everyone uses a DNS Server - it converts the alphabetical website address you enter in your web browser into the site's numerical IP address and, similarly, email POP3 and SMTP server addresses into their IP addresses.

For example, a DNS Server will convert http://www.google.co.uk into http://216.239.59.104 which is the address that is actually required to access the site. Try typing just the IP address (the string of numbers without the http://) into your browser and it should open Google's page.

The vast majority of people will use their own ISP's DNS Servers, which are allocated by DHCP along with their IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway addresses. If you set your computer and router to get their DNS Server addresses automatically, the router will get them from the ISP and the PC will get them from the router.
