I thought i'd share some tips on conducting video chats using Skype and Windows Live Messenger
The new Skype 4.1 has much better facilities for webcams now, especially if you own one of the latest models such as the Logitech 9000 or C905.
Videos calls are great in Skype, providing you are in a call with just one person. You can't video call more than one person at a time.
But Skype lets you do conference calls with multiple people.
To do this click on your contacts names whilst holding the CTRL key on your keyboard. Then click Call Group.
You can call multiple Skype contacts or landline and mobile phones. Bear in mind though, you will be paying the cost of calling the landline and mobiles, so check the rates here.
In order to view each others webcams in a conference call, you will also need to each log in to Windows Live Messenger and send webcam invitations to each other.
Open a chat with each person. On this chat window click the little webcam symbols on the left. Then choose 'Show my webcam'. Don't click 'Start a Video Call' as this also includes audio and you will already have the audio in the Skype conference call.
You can send invitations to your contacts to invite them to send webcam as well.
Then reposition each chat window on your screen so you can see all the cams.
I only tried webcam with 2 friends. Not sure how many it could support.
The size of the cam window is smaller in Live Messenger. Hoping they catch up with Skype soon!
There seems to be no clash between the 2 programs. So that's good news.
If anyone has any more tips, let me know!
