Windows 7 64bit
      #439951 - Sun Oct 11 2009 10:49 PM

I have just bought a new computer from Dell due to my old trusty machine throwing in the towel.

The new comp is a Dell Inspiron 546 with AMD Athlon 64 processor and 3GB of memory. It currently is running Windows Vista but a free upgrade to windows 7 was offered when I bought the machine.

I would like to increase the amount of memory on this PC but when I used the Crucial memory advisor it indicates that the maximum amount of memory a 32bit version of windows can use is 3GB, so it seems there is no point in increasing the memory unless I can get and run a 64bit version of Windows 7.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Cheers

Iain

That is correct!

Your machine will no doubt run x64 (64-bit) but your older software and hardware may misbehave, so I suggest you stick to x86 (32-bit).

i wouldn't go with the crucial website, i bought a studio 1737 from dell with 6gb of memory installed and crucial says i have only 4gb, i'm running vista 64bit and it seems i can go up to 8gb max, if i was running 32bit it seems the max is 4gb don't know why excactly but found this out on the dell website forum. i have also been running 32bit software on my studio and have had no problems as yet. as for windows 7 i bought it for my desktop from the microsoft shop which arrived today and it came with two discs 64bit and 32bit.
