Turned comp. on as usual and went for brekkie, returned to find screen blank.
Tried restarting several times, only to get as far as Welcome screen then nothingf.
Used ctl/alt/delete and task manager pops up and nothing else.

Any Help please?

You could try running chkdsk:

Boot from the XP CD and select the first repair option (R) which will take you to the Recovery Console. At the prompt type chkdsk /r (note the space) and press Enter.

Thanks for much needed reply. Unfortunately this comp. came preloaded with XPpro. and although I am sure I took a back up all those years ago I cannot find it. The only disc I have is Dell Driver disc which is no good for this problem.
Will keep looking but is there anything else I can try ?

The next best thing is the Ultimate Boot CD. You can run diagnostics that check the cpu, memory, disk, etc. Get it here http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Came accross paper CD which says that no Op. Sys CD with this comp, go
to Sys. Restore - which I cannot get to. Will download your suggestion and try.
Thanks.

Clicked on first one as you said BurrWallnut, and downloaded to disc on my laptop. However nothing happened on deskstop it remained the same, and nothing showed from disc. On looking at this item of Quad it looks like a reg. cleaner.

You have to be very careful when downloading free software as sometimes you are cunningly directed to registry cleaners, just as you were.

I have just noticed that the first link is the new beta version. The link you need is the second Softpedia link labelled as Softpedia (RO) [zip]. Here http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Ultimate-Boot-CD-Download-5992.html

The file size is 94.8MB.

BurrWallnut.
Finally got Comp. up and running 3 days ago, managed to save 'my docs', and got my 8gb drive replaced with additional memory.
Having trouble getting driver for Lexmark X2670 printer, as have lost disc. Every time I go to lexmark drivers on web, lexmark say they do not know it or it ends up someone wanting to do mass of business on my comp. Will go to hardware section for hopeful advice.

Thanks again, cauldbum.
