I have been looking at wifi routers online, but some say they are for bt and others for cable I am with be broadband also I notice that some of the reviews say you need a modem as well which has confused me. At the moment I just use the box that was supplied by be but I want to get a wi fi router to use with my laptop as well. So any advice would be appreciated.
As your broadband is ADSL delivered via the phone line, and assuming the "box" that BE supplied you with is a USB Modem, you need a combined "Wireless Router & ADSL Modem" to replace the USB modem.
Thanks so much, that is great now I know what I am looking for. One more question I have a lot of Amazon vouchers so I was hoping to buy one from them I put in 'wireless routers for broadband' and this one which is in my price range came up Linksys Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband WRT54G3G - W but is that what I need?
No, that is a variant of the WRT54G (which is a Cable/DSL Router suitable for Virgin's Cable service), but adapted for use with the 3G Mobile Broadband networks. It isn't suitable for ADSL.
I would suggest something like this Netgear DG834G Modem/Router from Amazon.
