We are currently on Virgin Media on a fixed line Broadband set up. We are thinking about going wireless in the near future. Our PC is a desktop PC but we would eventually like to purchase a laptop. Another reason we are looking to go wireless is that we have a Ninendo Wii and our daughter would like a Nintendo DSi (from Father Christmas of course). My wife and I both have mobile phones that can be used via wifi to access the internet for free.
Has somebody who's not sure of the wireless procedures what is involved? Do VM set you up or do I need to purchase anything from a computer shop? Does the Nintendo Wii etc work with a PC wireless connection?

Update to this question if anybody could help I have been given a Netgear wireless router (Netgear DG834GT) from my sister in law to try out. It includes the router, ethernet cable and a USB dongle or something similar. The router was used for Sky BB at her home. Can I use this router for my home and connect it to my desktop PC?
We will probably be sticking with the desktop for a while but like a mentioned in my first post we are looking to go wireless in the house for the nintendo wii and DSi.

If you have Virgin's Cable service then the Netgear DG834GT, which is a combined Router & ADSL Modem, is not suitable. It can only be used with ADSL broadband delivered via the phone line.
For examples of wireless routers which are suitable for Cable broadband Click Here

Thanks for the advice. I am going to contact Virgin to see about a wireless router from what I can see there are two versions a Wireless "G" router and a wireless "N" router based on my previous questions which would be the best for using with the Nintendo Wii and DSi? If there is not much difference then I am tempeted to go with the G as they are offering it for free.

If they are offering the "G" version (802.11g running at 54Mbps) for free then, unless you have Virgin's 50Mbps Cable service, go with that. If you later find you need a faster wireless connection, you can always upgrade to an 802.11n Router.
Generally, 54Mbps (in practice it will be closer to 30Mbps) is much faster than the speed of the internet connection so, unless you are likely to be transferring large files "wirelessly" between computers in your local network, 54Mbps is adequate.
Also bear in mind that to use 802.11n, all devices connecting to the Router wirelessly need to have Wireless Network Adapters that support the 802.11n protocol.
