Hi. An acquaintance of mine has written a software application and would like to get a demo version of it included on a magazine cover cd/dvd. Does anyone know the business model for this, eg, does he pay the magazine for inclusion? Thank you if you know anything.

I'm not sure that a magazine would do this. All of the CDs/DVDs I've seen have included well-known programs/applications which are recommended by many reputable sources.
I think your acquaintance would have to put in a lot of work, particularly testing, with proven good results, before any any magazine would even look at it.
Perhaps I'm being pessimistic as I don't know how magazines work or how they decide what to include on their cover disks. However, I do know that they would be in serious trouble if a program on their disk messed up peoples' computers!

I think Madeline's probably right but if your friend wants to push for it try looking at and asking the monthlies that carry these most often.
You don't say what kind of application it is, understandably, but I'd imagine it'd have to be something that they'd think was likely to be relevant and of relatively broad appeal to their readers.
Actually from some cover disks I have seen I wouldn't be so sure I'm right on that one

Very likely I'd say.

The best place to sound out this Topic is on the PC Utilities Programs Magazines (Use these keywords to find the locations) I think there are 2 1 in the UK and the other is Stateside (maybe closed?)
Other Places worth trying are CNET and Download .com
