Are you sure that your update downloads have been installed correctly? I find that if I use Automatic Updates (custom install) to download, installation occurs automatically on closing down the computer and restarting. I don't have to specify into which folder the update should be installed - Windows selects this automatically.
To check that installation has taken place correctly, open Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, and, at the top of the page, check the box immediately to the left of "Show updates".
When the list has finished loading, you should see all the Windows updates listed towards the bottom. If your updates are not there, they are in the wrong folder and you will need to download again and reinstall. The simplest way to do this is to open Automatic Updates, use Custom Install and let Windows tell you which updates are available for you to install. You are then free to decide which ones to download. Let Windows do the downloading and installation for you.
However, if all is correct, right-click on the icon that is bothering you and select Properties. This will tell you the file size (usually very tiny and not worth deleting on that account) and what its purpose is. If it's a shortcut, leave it. If it has no clear purpose, you could remove it to the Recycle Bin but it will occupy just as much space there (unless you delete it permanently) as leaving it where it is. Personally, I would let it remain if it is doing no harm.
