NIS 2010
      #438484 - Mon Sep 14 2009 02:11 PM

Anybody else had teething problems with NIS 2010?

It seems to have totally baffled HP Total care which now crashes, I think that's because its security element doesn't seem to recognise the way 2010 is installed.

I also had a failed update that led to a website that couldn't fix 7 errors, pretty major sounding errors. But when I went through it one with their support guys the problem disappeared after a restart.

I'm only glad I had their chat support to fall back on!

I'm still using NIS 2009 and your experience illustrates why! I rarely get a program as soon as it's released, because of teething problems. No matter how careful a company is, previously unknown things will inevitably show up as soon as a new version of a program is released. Plenty show up on the Norton Community forums, so being cautious I'll wait a while before updating. On the other hand, I might keep NIS 2009 for another year or two as it'll still be fully supported. I'd like to see some reviews too before taking the plunge.

I'm glad to know you got your problems with NIS 2010 sorted.

There's a lot to what you say.

You'll recall that when IE 8 came out NIS 2008 didn't like that but NIS 2009 did and likewise with Firefox 3.5.2 the NIS 2009 add ons didn't work but NIS 2010 did, I though I might be saving some grief quickly upgrading but with hindsight I was a bit too keen.

Have to say I do like the interface, there's stuff that may have been on 2009 but if so I never found it.

The bit I like the best is the flip to the CPU/Memory screen. IF you hover the mouse over the bar on CPU it identifies what .exe is using what % and if you click on the process it gives you info on how safe it deems the process to be.

From what you say, NIS 2010 sounds pretty good, so I'll probably get it rather than keeping on with NIS 2009.

All the same, I'll wait for a while until any problems have been sorted, I've still got 2 months left on my current sub anyway. At least NIS 2009 is behaving itself now they've got that 'Symantec Service Framework' trouble sorted!

I can't find anything on the Symantec website but I am fairly sure that you can upgrade and it'll take over the days remaining on your NIS 2009 subscription over, not that I looked that closely but I think that's what I did!

Can't find anything on the Symantec website that says that so I may be mistaken.

I think you're right, I'm sure I've read about it on the Norton Community forums and that you can upgrade to NIS 2010 free if you've got a current subscription. I'll still wait for a while though, even if I miss out on the free upgrade. They'll still give a good discount to existing Norton users!

Thanks Ray. As ever, my main difficulty is my slow connection. I'll look into it on the Norton forum when I'm ready to update, but I usually get a DVD rather than do a huge download! I'll certainly get e good discount at the very least. When I finally got round to getting NIS 2009 last year having used NIS 2003(!) for years*, I got a 20% discount even though I had such an old version.

*since 2003 oddly enough!

If I remember correctly Madeline doesn't have broadband and for dial-up it probably is quite a large download.

I notice on your signature ESET, so totally off topic, I can see that you can buy ESET online but can you get it in the shops too?

I know Madeline is on dial-up but I thought it must still be a hefty download. ESET Smart Security is a 34MB download approx. which should still take less than 2 to 3 minutes on any broadband connection but then again the same download for her would probably be 1½ to 2 hours.
As far as I know ESET Smart Security/NOD32 has not been available on disc for a couple of years, unless someone knows different. Well maybe not as long as that.

It's a big download for a dial-up user. It's around 72-75MB and it would take me about 5 hours at least to download the file. I can do it with my download manager if I have to, but I'll see what they advise on the Norton forum before I go ahead with such a large download. The biggest one I've done before was less than 40MB!

Ouch, that is even slower than I'd expected.

You have my sympathy as I remember using a 34.4 modem when friends were using broadband. I used to end up deleting a lot of mail with attachments on the mail server to avoid the download time.

My first modem was USR Sportster 13.6 something like that, which was OK for BBS but definitely not OK once microsoft IE and the web designers got their hands on the intermet

You must love the service packs for windows - I imagine there's no option to receive them by CD/DVD these days?

Actually, it's not as bad as you might think. It's surprising what you can do to cope with slow speeds.

For SP2, I installed this from a CD and had no trouble with it. After that, Microsoft began letting their updates resume from where they left off if you disconnected for any reason; this was a major improvement. SP3 (not available on a CD) was downloaded via MS Update and I can't remember how long it took as I just carried on doing other stuff while it did it, over several days probably As I was up to date regarding MS Updates at the time, it didn't need to download anything like the full Service Pack.

My main ally is my download manager. I've had one for years and the ability to resume a download after a disconnection instead of starting again from the beginning takes all the hassle out of big downloads.

Since I'm at home most of the time, I can do these big downloads when I don't want to use the PC for anything else. I've never yet tried anything as large as a 75MB download which will take about 5 hours. I may go for the DVD option from the Symantec store!

I'm fortunate in having a stable connection, usually 44.0Kbps or 45.2Kbps, which rarely disconnects unexpectedly. I wouldn't want to download music, films and videos or watch TV on-line, so in some ways, the lack of broadband isn't a problem.

So, it could be worse, I suppose!

I don't delete e-mail attachments if they're from family or friends, although I sometimes leave them in folders on my web-mail account.
