New Linux Ubuntu User
      #438181 - Mon Sep 07 2009 09:16 PM

Hi everyone

Thanks to popular computer magazines such as Web User and Computer Active, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. There was an entire magazine dedicated to it, with a free cover disk (Ubuntu is a Free Download too)

I'd never previously considered using Linux as an operating, being a computer engineer on Windows machines as my job, BUT flicking through the magazine seems to have given me some inspiration to at least try it.

As a result, I've also decided to set up a blog, where I'm hoping to put any experiences and thoughts with regards to the installation and use of Ubuntu in case anyone else is either considering it, or maybe interested. (Link below and on my profile)

I've only set the blog up in the past few days, but no doubt it'll be filling up as I progress with Ubuntu, with a view to using it for at least a week, without touching my Vista installation, and you never know, may even switch completely.

I'll probably become a regular poster here, if not answering questions (as I know nothing about Ubuntu yet), but asking all sorts of questions...

Please feel free to take a look and comment on the blog. Be interested to see what others think, and their experiences.

As an aside, I can highly recommend the "Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference" which has so far been really useful, both before i install, but also gives some useful advice. Search for it on Google books, I believe it's free too. Just like the Ooperating System

Thanks everyone

Bryan

Web User - Apologies if this is in the wrong category, but I couldn't find a Linux forum. Are there any plans for one ?

Hello there, Bryan,

Interesting to see that someone else on this virtually Linux-free forum is dipping a toe into Linux waters. I have scanned your blog and it echos the thoughts and feelings I have had about implementing a Linux 'distro', or not, as the case may prove.

It's funny, but there have been times when I feel like I've almost had to apologise for being a Linux user, or for encouraging it's use. It's like I've been a traitor, or broken 'the rules'. Fortunately, the Linux 'community' online is very helpful and friendly in the main, so there's no need to feel like a freak for long.

I have stayed with Linux, though I am still very much a learner. I have the option on my main laptop to boot into Vista, Ubuntu or Linux Mint, and the latter is the OS I now prefer. It is actually based on the Ubuntu distro, but I find it easier and prettier in use. Having said that, Ubuntu is the Linux flavour being pushed at new users, and Wubi has proved to be a great convenience to Linux beginners.

As well as the pocket guide and reference, i would also recommend that new or uncertain users read the Linux is not Windows article which deals in part with prejudices about Linux, and this one too. Of course there's also Ubuntu forums .

I wish you well on your Linux journey and hope you enjoy the trip even if you don't stay long at the destination!

Thanks for the welcome Spiraleye. I'll take a look at the links you've posted.

I'm far from a Linux guru, and as my blog suggests, my aim is to see if it IS possible for windows Users to switch to a Linux Operating System without too much hassle.

In my opinion, it's all about CHOICE. When we go and buy a new PC or Laptop, it always comes with Windows. No choice in the matter, to top it all I bet there aren't many people who have a computer even realise there IS an alternative.

That's what I'm hoping to achieve. If not convert myself into using a Linux Operating System, maybe someone out there who see's what I've done may deicde they quite like it. To be honest from what I've seen of Ubuntu so far, I really do like.

This is again, only in my opinion, I really think that Linux deserves a Subject Category of its own within the forums here. Putting it under 'Other software' hardly seems fair really. I had trouble initially trying to work out where to post.

Web User Admins.....Any chance of putting all the linux threads in a new cateogory ?? Seeing as it's an Operating system in it's own right, and not another piece of Windows software.
