Windows Mail Compacting Mail Problem
      #438018 - Thu Sep 03 2009 08:35 PM

I use Windows Vista. Messages in Windows Mail were being compacted and I must have interrupted the process, because when I went to the Inbox afterwards, all messages in the Inbox had disappeared. I need to have access to the contents of the Inbox urgently. Can anyone please advise how I might retrieve the contents of the Inbox. Many thanks.

Have a look in Users/Yourname/Appdata/Local/Microsoft/Windows mail/Local folders/inbox and see if the messages are still there.

If so, then I believe a backup of the database file for the messages (MSMESSAGESTORE) is located in the backup folder one level above.

Copy that to the windows mail folder and then try again.
Do all of this with Mail closed.

If that does not work and the eml files do exist then at least you have your messages.

Try googling for "rebuild msmessagestore file", that produces
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-mail/18555...ail-folder.html as one of the options. Have not looked too closely at it, but it is referred to in a good few links.

Good luck

Edit: If you still have the eml files you can drag and drop them back into Windows mail, which will probably be a lot quicker and easier. I've just tried it and it works, Just put them in the correct folder.
