I hope this is the best place for this, apologies if not.
I have an XP laptop, Zone Alarm Free Firewall and free AVG. I run a Firefox browser. I tried to connect to my internet banking account, after typing memorable info the screen returned to the logon page with no error messages. The Bank tell me I am not getting to their server in that case. Gmail practically freezes and is unusable. All other browsing, BBC or Webuser for example, works fine. I updated to Firefox 3.5, but no different. I opened IE and was able to access my banking and Gmail works fine. I believe from this that some security settings may have changed somewhere that is giving me the problem. SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are both ticked and third party cookies are allowed. Advice please?
Thanks..... Terry

Regarding the banking issues, quite a lot of financial institutions only use web page designs and software optimised for Internet Explorer. They refuse to realise that the rest of the world has decided to use their ability to use the arguably better choices on offer. Firefox being one of them in this case.
However, we can overcome this by downloading and installing -->> IE Tab Add-On <<-- which works well. It can be set to automatically open web pages of your choice (banking sites) in an Internet Explorer rendering engine and you go about your business as usual. Many banks actual state that you must use IE to view and/or use their sites interactively, but some don't and their staff are not trained on advising of the methods to overcome the 'banks' problems.
Try the Add-on, it should work for you. It comes in handy at other times also when you're having problems viewing or downloading whilst in Firefox. Just hit the IE Tab icon and you'll be surprised at the results.
Regarding the Gmail issue, have you tried either disabling all the installed Add-Ons via Tools -> Add-Ons, or running Firefox in Safe Mode via Start -> All Programs -> Mozilla Firefox -> Mozilla Firefox (Safe mode).
The latter will hopefully establish if say an already installed Add-On as well as a Theme or a Custom setting is to blame. Give it a try, and see what happens.

Thank you for your response which I have only just seen, not realising the post had been moved.
However, by a complete fluke I resolved the issue late last night. I recently added a subscription to my basic Skype access. As part of this I updated to the latest level. Then a couple of days ago there was a message within Skype asking whether I would grant access/deny 'skypenames.exe'. Initially, I just ignored the message, but last night I googled the exe and found that this was part of a recently added Skype Web software that was causing some problems. The recommendation was to uninstall the Skype Web Browser component, which I did, and hey presto, my internet banking now works and Gmail is performing as you would expect, both through Firefox!
Maybe this will help someone else, but I do appreciate your taking the time to provide some suggestions which I would have followed had I not stumble across the solution.
Thanks....Terry
