so it had nothing to do with the sites that he was surfing .
there isn't an antivirus that makes allowances for stupidity.
if you download a nasty or install a nasty you are bypassing your security.
AVG is one of the best FREE antivirus programs, if you want the best protection then you'll have to pay for it.

I doubt that they were all virus's - there couldn't be 64 virus's in the wild that the security community weren't aware of assuming the computer had the latest definitions installed. An antivirus/spyware/malware program is only any good if it is up to date.

I use Avast...used to use AVG 8.5....

Doesn't really matter what AV you use, it's only as good as the person using it.

My missus will open anything, and I mean anything.....

Attachments on Emails from unknown senders, facebook apps., any website under the sun.

I have to keep a really good, up to date ghost copy, just to keep tabs with her browsing.

All any AV program does, is answer your 'internet door' for you. The Virus knocks at the door, your AV answers & politely asks it to go away.

Sounds like your mate has done what my missus does.....

Invites the virus in, makes it a cup of tea, puts its favourite channel on the telly, cooks tea for it, then tucks it in for a good nights sleep.

My missus renders any AV program almost obsolete.....

If you leave the door open, there's no telling who will wander in.........

The person is actually a she and is very pc literate.

AVG missed 64 virus's and they were well known virus's.

I've heard of 74 virus's being missed on a companies machine running the AVG pro version in the past this was about a year ago.

AVG = a pile of profanity removed free or paid versions.

Sounds more like there could be that number of infected files rather than 64 separate infections. Anyway....

I have no bias, I don't use AVG, and haven't for quite some time. However, for ease of some friends who wanted to have it, I've installed on a number of machines. The friends range from scarily similar to MugsMoney's OH, to cautious and newish to the internet. Not one of them has had more than the odd one infection, but they've all had safe surfing lectures, had Spywareblaster installed and have automatic updates enabled. I fail to find AVG a bad product when I look at the range of knowledge and the frequency of their surfing, but maybe an AV alone isn't sufficient for anybody but the ultra cautious.

Dellboy keeps repeating such claims, and continues to ignore the sensible comments and reservations made by others regarding AVG. Anyone new wanting help or advice from this thread is not going to be impressed by this level of discussion.

I should of saved a log file for you all that say how good AVG is. 64 separate virus's it missed, thats an up to date AVG and the person is pc literate and is what I would say a general web surfer.

If AVG doesn't give adequate protection for general use like this it is a piece of rubbish in my book.

A lot of you are giving out bad advice simple as that.

This is a pretty serious accusation against Webuser regulars with a reliable track record.

If your claim is true, the burden is on you to provide better evidence than you have so far done to support your serious reservations about AVG. Otherwise, your claim makes no sense to long-term and satisfied users of AVG, and to reputable reviewers of the same antivirus software.

Can I butt in and ask how someone who is literate with a PC picks up 64 viruses?

I know several friends and clients who are PC illiterate and have not picked up that many viruses in their PC lifetime let alone in one anti virus scan.

Are you certain these were viruses and not spyware and tracking cookies?

I've used AVG free on 5 family machines for a number of years with no problems.
It would be interesting to know what software Dellboy used to find & remove the 64 viruses with.

Eset NOD32 and Malwarebytes and I have since put Eset Smart Security and Malwarebytes on that system.

They were not tracking cookies they were serious virus's, well known big name ones including the likes of Vundo and My Doom, variants of other Trojans in there too, that was the only repeated infections, variants of the same Trojans if you want to be specific. I should of saved that log file and uploaded it here, I wouldn't be listening to your recommendation after seeing that if I was a beginner looking for a half decent anti virus.

Also speaking to friends in the industry even they said AVG went down the pan and is not reliable since it went 8.5 and cut out moduals. Free AVG doesn't even have a root kit finder for gods sake and your recommending that? when it also misses well known virus's?

Free AVG home is not reliable and doesn't give basic protection your all fools to recommend it.

74 virus's were found on a company system running AVG Pro by an IT administrator. Sure enough AVG was no more.

A decent Anti-virus wouldn't let all that in in the first place.

If you want to have a discussion about this issue, it might be better if you avoid insulting forum contributors. Do you think people will be so keen to respond to you if you need help from forum members in the future?
