Hello,
Can anyone suggest an answer to this problem, please?
I haven't used Internet Explorer for ages, possibly for two years or more, and only use it from time to time to update my installation of Windows XP Pro. Because I don't use IE, I have never bothered to upgrade it to the latest version; I am still on version 6.
Just recently a friend was using my computer and said that he couldn't get IE to work properly in that clicking on the "favorites" icon did not produce the bookmarks and clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screeen did not shut IE down. Further, although the bookmarks appeared when clicking on "Favorites" (the word, rather than the icon), clicking on various bookmarks did not result in the appropriate web page appearing. Thinking that perhaps I might need to update it I clicked on "Tools" and then "Windows Update" and got a message saying that I couldn't download anything from the Windows Update web site unless I was logged on as an administrator. I was logged on as an administrator at the time so I am wondering what is going on.
As far as I know, nothing has been changed on the machine so it looks as if IE has somehow become corrupt. How can I 'uncorrupt' it if that is what the problem is?

Hi Chris
Have to say that has all the hallmarks of a virus. IE6 is full of vulnerabilities and may have become infected. An HJT log seems to be in order.

Hi Spencer, I was afraid that someone might say that. I sometimes think that it is a mistake to let other people use one's computer. Will do an HJT log now.
Regards,
Chris
