Reasonable?
      #436503 - Sun Aug 09 2009 07:32 PM

I know a lot of people hate PayPal when using eBay - some just object to the fact that eBay milks another load of money off the sale.

We have tried PayPal only but went back to Cheque and Postal Orders as well as PayPal as some people clearly did not like having to IMMEDIATELY pay. To be honest we get very few postal payments - seriously less than 1 in 100.

Anyway, we sold a number of items to a buyer (who lives about 20 miles away). This is on the 25th July and I send a combined invoice. On 27th she emails to say she is paying by cheque. After a few days I email to check it has been sent - nothing.

Finally on 1st August I started an Unpaid Item Dispute (two more ignored emails), more to get a reaction than anything else. 4th August she comes screaming back - gives cheque number but interestingly the date is 31st (four days AFTER she was supposed to send it). She then says she will send a Postal Order that afternoon.

Over the next few days we had to put up with several emails - including the accusation 'You better not cash it and not send the items' several times.

Anyway, the end is by Saturday I had enough. No cheque, no Postal Order so I closed the case, and the buyer gets FIVE Unpaid Strikes.

She emailed today explaining how she was sending her Post Office Receipts to eBay by Recorded Delivery - pity she never did that with the cheque!

I know you will say, there was a postal strike - not round here! We had post and collections all week.

Frankly I just felt the woman was faffing around far too much. I found it very strange she made no query about what I would do with the cheque if it arrived but berated me for 'not giving me until Monday'. Well 17 days to pay, to me is TOO long.

We have allowed delays in the past, this includes people emailing to say 'I forgot!'. Everyone is human. But two payments missing?

Just curious what the feeling is out there from the buyer's point of view.

Harsh or strictly fair?

You treated her more than fairly. If I go into a shop and buy something I expect to pay for it there and then. An on-line transaction is no different.

Thanks for that.

As mentioned, she kicked up a fuss as 'You could have least waited until Monday'.....................Still no payment if I had.

All good fun.

I agree, 17 days is too long to wait for payment.

Maybe you should add on your Ebay listing 'Payment within 7 days'.

We actually say 'Payment within three days, or notification of payment required within that time' - basically saying pay by PayPal or let us know. We then specify payment by cheque or Postal Order seven days after sale.

Interestingly at this point we STILL have not received either the cheque she said she sent nor the Postal Order - beginning to look like a scam where we were supposed to send the items out of guilt. At the end of the day proof of posting is not proof of receipt and we do seriously think nothing has been sent.

'Fraid we did not bite.

Interesting update to this case.

An envelope came through our door the other day addressed to (numbers changed for this post) 97. And it was the 'missing payment' sent to the wrong address - we live at 94 which is actually a good half a mile or more away on the other side of the road.

And today the wayward buyer is back to ask if they can try again............

Have emailed back asking IF she had a Certificate of Posting, as she claimed, that it must show the wrong address. Quite happy for her to send the money again (she had the Postal Order cancelled by the Post Office), but fascinating that after all the screaming emails she sent, she has been proved well and truly wrong..............
