Getting video from VHS tape
      #435854 - Fri Jul 31 2009 03:16 PM

Did a search but could not find the answer to this.

I have a laptop with built in video card, I have inputs for USB, SVHS (this could be an output unless it does both?) and a 9-pin monitor connection.

I am hoping to copy some video from VHS into digital format (might burn onto DVD eventually, but main thing to get off tape)

Do I just need a lead with S-VHS on one end and Scart on the other and some free software? or do I need any other hardware please?

Thanks

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400, is there some way I can check that the video card accepts input as well as output?

Could I not fit an S-VHS plug to one end of a spare Scart cable I have? My laptop has S-VHS socket and my VHS has Scart socket. Or is there something special in those devices that can be bought that converts the signal in some way?

Thanks

Unless stated I suspect the 'video' card of the laptop is output only.

Anyhoo, once you crack the wiring/capture capability I hope you've got oodles of RAM & hard rive, video capture and rendering is memory/storage intensive.
