Have googled trying to do this but cant quite manage to get the background around the heart shape not to show ,in a layer. Does anyone have an alternative or know a trick to acheive what I am trying to do ?? any help gratefully received. Thanks in advance

There are many ways to achieve this, this way uses the Custom Shape tool to draw your heart shape.
Make sure you have the Paths Window palette (panel) on view. Open your chosen image -> Select the Custom Shape tool -> Navigate to the heart shape -> 'draw' in your heart shape -> Right click the 'Work path' in the pallette (panel) and select 'Make selection' -> In the Menubar click 'Select' -> Inverse -> Hit the Delete key.
Now you have a heart shape with the areas outside of the heart gone.
Note: You can get a good effect if you experiment with the 'Feather' options at the 'make a selection stage.
Hope this helps.

When I try this it always gives me a message saying "Could not complete your request because the content of the layer is not directly editable". Tried changing the Jpeg from Background to an ordinary layer but no joy. What am I doing wrong? I've followed the instructions to the letter four or five times. CS3/XP/Laptop with 3Gb of RAM.
