My hi-def camcorder came with the ArcSoft software program which I think is terrible.
What is good software for editing hi-def footage? I know there's plenty for standard definition and YouTube quality material.

Most video editing applications are non-destructive and suitable for any footage. What you need to check out is the output/export quality, that's where the damage is done with HD material.
As to which one, I'm not really up on what's out there these days as I settled on, and invested in, Adobe Premiere Pro some years ago, but Adobe Premiere Elements might be worth investigating output-wise.
Magix and Pinnacle are the other two names I'd look into.

I want to edit my HD footage, too. But, by now, haven't found an excellent program. I was told that it is difficult to edit HD footage without losing quality, because camcorders compress their footage into a variant of the mpeg4 compressor such as H.264 or AVCHD. These formats are efficient at storing and transporting HD material, but they were never designed for editing. Now I do not know what to do.
