First Time Web Site Developer - Tips on Improving Site Please
      #434476 - Mon Jul 13 2009 06:14 PM

Hi,

I have voluntarily developed a web site for a local charity in my spare time (www.hshr.org.uk). I am a retired IT consultant, but haven't been a hands on developer for about 15 years and never web development, so this is a first for me.

I would appreciate any experienced web developers on here putting forward any tips on how I can improve the site.

I have tried to avoid using tables as has been suggested on here and kept page sizes down where possible. as well as ensuring the page width isn't too wide. The main editor has been Dreamweaver.

I have registered the site with yahoo and it is being picked up by google, so hopefully local people will find it. We are launching it at the AGM on Friday.

A couple of things though:
- The Colours/fonts/graphics are all bound by Corporate style
- I am looking to develop a contact form for the FindUs page but need to develop my PHP coding and CSS Stylesheet skills as the look and feel of the one I have put together isn't good enough (imho).

Thanks

Angela

Morning echodolly

Your site looks very well indeed. At this moment in time I haven't time to read all of it but briefly I would comment on it's left side position on the screen.
Much like Webusers site, it hogs the left side. Whilst this doesn't change the content and it's message, it does look a little odd on wide screen monitors. This of course could be your preference.

I would also change the name of the 'Title' which reads in a tab or title bar 'Home page' to something more meaningful.

Excellent stuff in my opinion.

Also, for me (Fedora Core 11, FF 3.5) at the 1024x768 res., there is a lot of spare room on the right which is quite strange. Even though this is not a real problem, it just looks strange and I thought you might like to know.

As for the Contact form, you could try this post:

All the best and good luck.

...And still have not used BSD.
REHL is the best Linux in my opinion!
p.s. I did not use Firefox as my name, I came up with Flamingfox, then discovered Firefox.
