Hi my buddys daughter was sitting on sofa with laptop while drinking water she coffed and the water went over laptop and i think its in a sorry state not switching on is there anything they can do to get files off the laptop onto pc or try getting it to work
A few years ago I did a similar trick with a laptop. Fortunately HDD's are fairly robust and don't take in liquids that easily.
I purchased one of these -->> USB 2.0 to IDE Adaptor <<-- which allowed me to transfer wanted files to another machine. You can get more aesthetic looking 'caddies' to do the same job, but I needed one urgently, and it did do the job. I still use it these days to quickly check the contents of old drives.
Downside is you need to take the HDD out. Not a problem on a PC, but laptops are very compact, and sometimes, depending what make and model, you have to strip quite a bit of it away to actually get to it. Then of course put it all back together without having half a dozen screws left over!
If you or you pal don't feel like trying to get at the HDD, perhaps a trip to the local PC repairer might be more of a viable option. They could also advise it the laptop was repairable or not. It's the motherboard that takes the most damage.
You can claim off the house insurance if he wants to go down that route, but be aware that an insurance company will need the laptop for their assessors to evaluate the damage and you won't get it back easily. Best to retrieve all data first if possible, then put a claim in.
