I think it`s all the new features that are being built in to these new browsers. IE8 is the same - slower to load than IE7. Although FF is still faster in every respect than IE8.
Anyway,I`ve found the only time it is particularly slow is when loading up for the first time after boot up.After that it soon speeds up and the more times I load it the faster it gets. Once I have turned off the laptop it`s back to square one of course!
But I`m quite happy to put up with a slightly slower loading FF if it means faster browsing.

I've found Firefox 3.5 quicker both to open and to use.
Things that can slow it down are the number of Bookmarks, Add-ons and RSS Feeds you have.

...and a strange relationship between Firefox and Internet Explorer. I've read that scans done as Firefox starts involves IE's cache. Also that IE8 modifies some files to do with JavaScript. Reverting to IE7 cures that. It's all a bit uncertain though with no concrete reasons given that I can find.

Very odd. I read what it said on your link, but I haven't experienced a slow start up with Firefox 3.5 yet. As I said, it's quicker than the previous version for me.
I've got IE8 and don't wish to revert to IE7. Is there anything in particular I should look out for?

Not that I know of. I haven't got 3.5 installed at present because a couple of NIS 2009 extensions I rely on aren't compatible with it yet. 3.5 didn't seem to suffer from slow start-up when I did have it installed though. I'm not sure about the relationship between IE and Firefox but the idea hasn't been thrown out in the Mozilla forums, so maybe there's something to it.

OK, thanks.
I assume you mean 'Norton IPS 1.0' and 'Norton Toolbar 3.5' when you refer to extensions in NIS 2009 not working with Firefox 3.5? If so, you should be OK to use FF 3.5 from this coming Wednesday (15th). I've got NIS 2009 too and have just waited for the update with the 2 extensions disabled.
More info here from the Norton Community forum.

Thanks Madeline - Those are the extensions. I've been keeping abreast of the grumbles about them not being made compatible in time for the release of 3.5 and have also read about the expected update next week. Those extensions are stored in Norton's folders, rather than Firefox's. They are protected against tampering too, so no chance of attempting to make them compatible.

You're welcome. I suppose that the update will be distributed via LiveUpdate.
The Tamper Protection is a useful feature, but a bit of a nuisance if you need to use System Restore!

I was a little indignant at first when Norton installed those extras into Firefox. I've come to like and rely on them now.

I think Mozilla are working on some of the bugs reported in version 3.5 and it won't be long before 3.5.* arrives.

I doubt if NIS 2009 would be causing your slow start up of Firefox. As I said before, I've found Firefox 3.5 faster than previous versions and I run NIS 2009 too.

I was a bit surprised to see those Add-ons in Firefox too, but it'll be nice to have them working again, hopefully tomorrow.

Just checked with Norton and the fix has arrived a day early (or most of it has). See here.

Edit: Just upgraded to Firefox 3.5. The Norton toolbar only is working. IPS still remains to be updated.

I got the fix which seems to be working OK. However, when I opened Firefox after restarting, I found that 7 or 8 of my Add-ons (extensions, not themes) had been disabled as being incompatible with Firefox 3.5. This was nonsense as they worked fine before the Norton fix, so I used MR Tech to sort them out and they all appear to be working now. Maybe I should have disabled the Toolbar instead. Actually, MR Tech seems to work on Norton IPS 1.0, for which no fix is available yet.
It'll be interesting to see what happens after a reboot!

Well Firefox 3.5, including the Add-ons which had been disabled, is working fine following a reboot, except for Norton IPS 1.0 which has gone back to being disabled. I'm not surprised about this, I think I was being somewhat over-optimistic in thinking that MR Tech would be able to make it compatible with Firefox 3.5!

In NIS, IPS uses attack signatures (similar to virus signatures) to block attacks directed at known software vulnerabilities. This is explained in the Help file. If you are conscientious about keeping your software patched, you needn't worry about IPS.

The above is a quote from the Norton forum which explains it well.
To learn about IPS, lookup Intrusion Prevention in Help.
