mobile internet access
      #4254 - Thu Jul 31 2003 04:14 PM

I am currently living on a narrowboat and am looking to access my e-mails and the internet via my Nokia 6310i mobile phone and my laptop computer. Does any one know of any ISPS who offer such a service without needing a landline and at what cost? The cheaper the better as I will not be using it that much.
Thanks!

Hi nadia

You can choose any ISP that takes your fancy. Your only problem is connecting your mobile to your laptop. I think the 6310 has an infra red port. If your laptop has one as well then they need to be in line of sight for the connection to be made. The Nokia is also BlueTooth compatible or you can buy a bit of wire to join the PC to the phone. You will also need some software to install on your PC. If you go to this site you can get it for free. You can also buy your cable right here.

The only problem with choosing an ISP is that a lot of them require a BT line (which I haven't got) and some give you an 0800/0845 access number which isn't very cost effective for me. I am currently with T-mobile who charge 10p/min for access to these numbers. I suppose I am looking for an ISP provider who will give me a "normal" telephone number so that I can use with my free minutes.
It's all getting very complicated!
Help!!!

Have a look at this site . I use them for just the Sim card as I have a sim free phone. I know nothing about there internet service but it look's quite good and may fit your bill.

BTW where are you on the cut? I've just been offered a free 2 week cruise from Oxford to Castleford at the end of September. The owner wants his boat taken home after being on hire during the summer. He say's 250 miles and 90 locks which I reckon to be 85 hours cruising. Is that a holiday?

We are on the Staffs & Worcs canal. We reckon if you take some crew along with you, it would be a holiday. Make them do all the lock work and you'll be laughing!
Thanks for all your help.
Have a nice holiday!

nadia, hi, i have the same problem as yourself. what dial up number do you use?
i'm currently looking into buying a broadband modem wireless network card for the laptop, and then use that for all internet. the extra expense could be offset against saving lots of lovely money by using that free program "pc2call" or "pc2fone" for voice calls from a mob.

any ideas?
thanks, + good luck
