I bought a 3 mobile dongle last november. Until just over a week ago this worked ok. Then suddenly it became very erratic, sometimes slow, then ok and then not connecting to web sites. My son tried it again last Friday and it worked ok and again on Saturday. He lives 70 miles from me and I saw him yesterday and removed Comodo firewall and replaced it with one from PC Tools. It was still working so I restarted AVG (whick had been stopped as Comodo included one) and tried to update it. This failed after getting half the update file. I tried a number of times, but to no avail. I thought he must have an anti-virus tool so I removed AVG and downloaded ThrearFire from PC Tools. This took a long time to download, but eventually it was installed ok. However, now Firefox couldn't connect to any websites. After a long session of trying I removed ThreatFire and re-install AVG. Firefox then worked , but only slowly. About 15 minutes later it worked at a good speed, but then couldn't connect again. At this point it was getting very late and I had to go home.
Does anyone have any idea why this is so erratic? Is it a virus, the 3 network, the mobile dongle or another problem. My son talked to the 3 helpdesk whe it first went slow and was told his PC was broken and to get it fixed. As it has worked ok now and again since then it must be somethimg else. Also we sent pings which were also erratic, some times sending 4 were all received , then one was lost then it timed out. This all points to a problem with either the 3 network or the dongle. Any help will be much appreciated as I have spent far too long trying to sort this out and am rapidly losing mu hair!!!

3 replaced dongle with a new one.
This worked fine for a time then just stopped loading pages. After numerous attemps and cleaning the registry it worked again. Didn't alway connect straight away, took sveral attempts, but when Connected strength varied between 2 bars and 9 bars out of 10 ! Whenever it failed to load a page connection strength was 3.
Either I'm very unlucky and the new dongle is also faulty, or there is a problem with my son's laptop. Any ideas will be greatly received!!

A 3 dongle uses the mobile telephone network and just like a mobile phone, connections can be erratic. The more people using the system near your particular 'node' the slower your connection will be. You need to do some systematic testing of the system, that is to say check the speed at specific times of the day and night and specific days of the week. Make a note of your findings and see if a pattern emerges. For example, if it's always slow around 7.30 on a Friday night it's probably because the world and his wife are all trying to connect to the internet.
