sim card activation
      #411639 - Sun Nov 02 2008 09:21 PM

Doe's anyone know how I can activate a sim card for data?

I bought a Vodafone mobile broadband usb stick p.a.y.g. on Ebay, with a new sim card and it won't connect to the web.

According to the instructions that came with it,the sim card must be activated for data maybe that is why it won't connect.

You need to ask Vodaphone to do that for you. Something doesn't sound right somewhere. A Broadband USB stick from Vodaphone should come ready to use. It shouldn't need any special action on your part.

Thanks for replying, vodafone have said it is not the right card because the stick is ment for a contract so it will not work with a mobile phone sim,you were spot on reply.

Hi Sylvia
I bought a "3" usb modem paygo, I used it in the UK for 2 months and paid "3" £15 for
the unlock codes so I can use it abroad without the roaming charges. I now use it in Spain with Vodafone.
You first need to get some money on your sim card, put your sim card in an ordinary phone and put enough money on it. This is for calls and needs to be changed to data, you could ask the operator to do this. On Vodafone Spain you send a text message and it texts you back to say X amount of gbytes are transfered. Make sure you have data, it will still work but it will cost a lot.
Put the sim card in your usb modem and plug it in, it should start automatically
On the screen that comes up at the top, there should be some signal strength.
Go to settings
On the network tab, manual choose network, and search, select Vodafone 3G.
On the connection tab you need profile name, vodafone and authentication, number = *99# user name = vodafone and password is probably vodafone. The APN is ac.vodafone.es (in Spain)
You should check all these settings, try in a Vodafone shop, or Car Phone Wharehouse. or the operator. Make a new profile and save the settings.
In the message menu you will find in the inbox sim/usim a message to say your money has been changed to data.
I hope you are in a 3G area with a reasonable signal other wise it will still work but slowly.
Best of luck.
