Can someone please tell me how to mute the sound my computer makes when it's dialling up? I go online pretty late, and the racket is enough to waken the dead! I'm on Windows XP, if that's any help. My user name says it all!
Cheers TP

You have to do it in two different places though. If I remember correctly, as well as following the advice in the thread given above, you'll also have to go into modem properties from control panel and do it all again.
Hope that's right, but no doubt someone will correct me if I've got it wrong.
I should add that this is for Windows ME.

Aaaaagghhh! Still none the wiser, when I go into My Computer there is no mention of Dial-up Networking,OR modem properties. :(
Any further help along the lines of 'John has a bat etc' would be really appreciated. Err, I'm also on AOL, which probably has no relevance.........

Hi there
Try this route :-
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections. Choose the appropriate connection (it should be under the heading Dial-Up) and right click on it. Choose Properties then on the General tab click on Configure. Take the tick out of the box headed 'Enable modem speaker' then OK twice.
Let us know how you get on.

Oh good grief, I'm being cast into some strange and dreadful alternative universe. The item I clicked on says 'AOL Dial-on-Demand feature- Please do NOT delete this then, Disconnected.' Bear with me, grey, I got as far as right clicking on Properties, and got no further. Nada, no General tab etc.
I'm beginning to think this computer would make a very attractive bonfire........

Try this method
Click Start | Settings | Control Panel. Double-click the System icon and go to the Device Manager tab. Click Modem to show the modem you have. Double-click your modem to bring up its properties. Turn off the sound

Hi
I think you've put a right click in the wrong place. After you've get to Properties you left click then carry on as shown.

You using AOL, if so you need to start AOL but don't connect.
Click on Setup which is next to Access Numbers.
Next Click On Expert Setup
On the next screen click the TAB called Devices (modems, etc)
Double click on your Modem and an option will appear called Speaker Volume, change that to off then click ok, then close and then you can connect and you shouldn't hear your modem. Its one of those weird things about AOL, that you need to switch it off inside the AOL software otherwise it will keep ebing audible.
Hope that helps you.

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions, but particularly to Spitoon who appears to be an AOL victi...... err subscriber, and is therefore au fait with its peculiarities.
Voila, no more dial-up racket! Let joy be unconfined..... Thanks again to everyone.

Aye i'm a AOL subscriber, but you can't blame me, not when I get 1 month free then cancel and get offered another 3 months free of charge, especially when in 3 months i'll have broadband, so 4 months Internet access for sod all. The best thing though, no cut offs whatsoever, been connected many times in the last 2 months for 6-12 hours in one go and never been sent an email saying "Curb your usage". Its worth any hassle for that.
