changing ISP
      #4019 - Tue Jul 29 2003 10:17 PM

This is going to sound really stupid, i'm thinking of changing ISP as I'm with Freeserve Hometime at the moment, I don't have any problems with them, am always able to connect and get either 50 or 52 kbps (never 51!), its just that when I signed up I sisgned up with BT's SurfTime package as well, this cost me £42.12(including line rental) a quarter plus £17.85 for Freeserve HT. This was ok for the amount of time I spend online (3-4 hours each night and most of the weekend!)
My questions are: Bt have changed their packages and I'm not sure that it'll work out as cheap as it now seems to be a general Together package which includes calls which in our case are neglible. Is there a site similar to the one for switching gas & electric that will calculate the best package?
Secondly would I still have to have the same Together package no matter what ISP I look at-cable isn't an option as it isn't here
I can't fathom out BT's site, can't seem to find the straightforward cost of line rental on its own!
Thirdly if i did switch, is there any way of electronically sending change of email address cards or do you have to do it manually?, I'm not thinking of my personal address boook, but all the other stuff that you have to register with eg this forum, Microsoft registration etc
Any help anyone? It's a bit like changing banks really, you feel you can get a better deal but can you cope with the hassle!
Thanks
rebecca

No. You don't sound stupid. Some people think I know a lot about computers, mainly because I've posted so many messages, but there's a lot I don't know. We all know about things we've had dealings with, and that's how this site works. Even "Putasolutions" can't know it all, so there could be occasions when even he thinks he sounds ignorant, as we all are about problems we haven't yet solved.

Sorry. I know that's pretty close to blasphemy, suggesting that perhaps the master doesn't know everything, but I think he'd agree with me. If you have to beat me up though, at least do it gently.

I had trouble with Freeserve a couple of years ago. Like you, I made the mistake of signing up to BT's "together" deal as well as Freeserve's "Home Time", which meant paying double.

I haven't been able to find out for sure, but I believe this is a rip-off that people with credit cards are able to avoid by going straight to Freeserve and only paying the Freeserve charge.

I had a few additional problems, with Freeserve taking the money for another 3 months and then cutting me off, but I understand they've made a few improvements since then, so perhaps this doesn't happen any more. It took months to sort out though, and in the end I had to involve BT's chairman.

I'd say ditch your "together" deal. I've got the one for calls, but the internet part does seem to be a complete rip-off. You can pay an ISP direct and only pay the ISP's charge, or you can pay BT's "together" charge as well as paying the ISP.

Apologies to BT if I've got that wrong, but you should make things easier to understand.

If you've got a credit card and are able to be at home during the day (probably not), I can recommend Tiscali's "Daytime" service. Unmetered access from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday for only £4.99 a month and nothing extra to BT.

http://www.tiscali.co.uk

As for "change of address" cards, why not just e-mail everybody? Create a standard e-mail, enable "BCC" in Outlook Express (Open a new message, go to View, All Headers) and put all the addresses in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field. That way they won't get a list of everybody the mail was sent to, as they would if you put them in the CC (Carbon Copy) field.

Back on this site, you'll probably have to register a different user name to go with your new e-mail address, but perhaps a nice smile to the right member of staff could result in your old (existing) account being cancelled so you can continue with your present user name. They can do it, so perhaps they will if you ask them nicely.

Almost forgot. You don't need to tell Micro$oft about the new e-mail address. The update site will still work. I think it's the Windows "key" that identifies you as a paid up user.

There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.

Having read your comments on the evening and weekend internet access ( surftime) what you at the moment is £7 per month inc vat that is all you pay BT on top of the £7 you are then charged per month for your ISP which is your choice and what they charge is between the cutomer and the ISP. If you chose btopenworld ( god forbid ) you would then add on another £6.99 making it £13.99 per month inc vat. I think the ISP's make it so expensive so as you may as well pay that little bit extra and have an anytime package sneeky I know. Bt do an anytime package that you can just put on your phone bill £17 per month but you do have to be on a bttogether package again pretty sneaky As for your phone package they have also changed ring 150 to find out which is the best for you.You can still have surftime and be on standard line rental which is just £10.50 per month inc vat. Ihope I have cleared up some points for you.
From a Bt worker and yes tiscali is a good ISP

Thanks for your comments, and especially that about still being able to have surftime, this is carefully not mentioned in any of the stuff about together and as I said 99% of our phone usage is internet. So I will check out the BT package and have a look at other ISP's. I am quite happy with Freeserve generally but if I can get tyhe same for less hey that's a bonus!
Thanks again
