In some recent issues of WEBUSER I thought I'd download some stuff, but ZONE ALARM thought otherwise. It blocked the website < tinyurl.com > saying that "This website may be unsafe. It has been known to distribute spyware. Site first registered on 27/01/02. Country of Origin NL". Anyone got any ideas? Declan, Slough.

The reason lies behind the fact that zonelabs believe that tinyurl is a distributor of spyware. The way forwarward is to add tiny.url to your trusted sites should you so desire

I don't think it's the actual TinyURL service that dishes out malware is it? It's more that malicious sites might hide their true URL behind a TinyURL link. The advice sometimes seen is therefore not to click on TinyURL links. That's unfortunate in my opinion because I think TinyURL provides a basically good service. There is a way you can check the true URL behind a TinyURL link before visiting the site. It might help ease the mind a bit. Apologies if it's been mentioned elsewhere:
1. Right-click on the link, choose 'Copy Link Location' paste it into the browser's Address Bar. Then prefix the word 'preview' to the URL so that it looks like this:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/64gqux (this link just leads to my site via the TinyURL preview page).
2. An easier option is to go to the TinyURL site and enable the preview by default. Just click the link that says 'Click here to enable previews' on this page:
http://tinyurl.com/preview.php
It will place a cookie that tells the browser to always go to the TinyURL preview page so that you can see the destination of the link before going to the site.
Having said that, are we always wary of links that aren't hidden behind TinyURL? Any link followed could lead to drive-by malware and we'd be none the wiser until it's too late.

Thanks for the advice re:Tinyurl.com, I found three files called HOSTS opened them with notepad and found no mention of Tinyurl.com. I tried this web address on my brothers laptop and it was blocked again, so looking at other enquiries it looks like I should just forget about it.

It seems as if you should be looking in ZoneAlarm. I have don't use ZA but read there's somewhere that you can add TinyURL to an exclusion list within the program if you want to. Read here.
