What sort of things do you want to do with your scanner?
I purchased a PCL-3000flatbed scanner time ago. It works fine, but when I install it it disables some other functions of my computer; When I click on 'My Computer' - 'Folders' - 'Local Disk (C:)' I get the 'searching flashlight' for two or three minutes at each step. The only way round this problem seems to be to create a restore point, install the scanner, do my scanning, and then do a 'System Restore'. My system is MS Windows XP, Home Edition. My computer is an Intel (R), Celeron (K) CPU, 3.20GHz. What am I doing wrong?

Try uninstalling the current scanning software, reinstall without the scanner being plugged in, using the latest driver. The PCL 3000 is a Mustek 1248 UB, and the driver can be found here

I want to scan documents and pictures, mainly for sending by e-mail.

Thanks. As I remember, I did try installing the software without connecting the scanner, but the computer wouldn't allow it. I'll try downloading the 1248 UB driver, as suggested, and try again.

I've tried uninstalling the PCL 3000 software, and installing the Mustek 1248 UB driver software, but the same thing happens.

Have you tried a different USB port?

Yes, I've tried both USB ports on the front of the computer, and two on the back - same result. I've even tried installing the software to a memory stick - same result.
As I said in my first posting, I can get round the problem by waiting until I have several items to scan, creating a restore point, installing the scanner, scanning, then doing a 'System Restore'. It's a pain, but it works.
The sacnner itself works fine - very easy to operate.
