Hi - I am posting at the recommendation of Joe London on the Hijack This forum. We have been spending some considerable time trying to sort out my problem. Basically I have a small home network which consists of 2 PCs each wired direct to a Netgear router, and a laptop which has a wireless connection. One PC connects with no trouble to the Internet/ email Browsing etc. The second (mine) is the one causing the problem - it does not connect on startup and then sometimes not at all. It sometimes connects if I switch on the laptop (almost as if it is kickstarted) and it sometimes just connects with no warning and for no apparent reason. I have done everything the Hijack This forum suggested and they say it is not a malware problem. When trying to connect, the IP address it apparently searches for is 169.254.55.253. The other PC has 192.168.0.2 and the laptop has 192.168.0.3. When I do connect successfully, the IP address is 192.168.0.4. I have tried IP/renew etc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the ethernet card. I don't know why it searches for the 169 address. I even tried manually configuring the Internet Connection, but although it said it was connected (and the PC icons were blinking) I could not get on the Net or do my emails. Also the laptop is now the same, that is, it looks as if it is connected but the browser and email do not work. I have Windows XP SP2 (I am wary of downloading SP3 with all this trouble), AVG 8.0, Comodo Firewall. System Restore does not work, and to be honest, this has been going on for a while, so I am not sure what to try and restore it to anyway. I would be grateful for any help. As Joe London and putasolutions and greyst have all suggested something, I expect they would be pleased to see it resolved too! Thanks in hope... Viv

The IP address that it is searching for appears to be a corporate domain address. You haven't by any chance been given an old works pc have you?
Ok can we try giving the troublesome pc a static network address and see if it has any problems
Click Start | Control Panel. If you are in Classic view, Click Network Connections If you are in Category view Click Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections. Double-click on your ethernet adaptor. Click Properties. In the General tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and click Properties
.
Click General tab, and click Use the following IP address, and enter the following
- IP address. 192.168.0.10 - Subnet mask. 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway. 192.168.0.1 In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter the IP addressses 192.168.0.1 Click OK. Click OK
Restart your PC
See if it can connect straightaway

Hi No I have had the PC from new for a couple of years or so. I have put in the static address as you suggested and it had now connected successfully twice. Thanks, that is a big improvement, although weirdly I had tried doing that before with no success. Should I leave it be? Any ideas why it should have done what it did? Also should I download SP3 now? Thanks again Viv

I have been trying to do a reverse DNS search on the original IP address and I am no further in identifying the culprit, which means it could be a proxy server.
I would leave it be, it's perfectly safe on a static Ip address on your LAN
I really do recommend you install SP3

Ok thanks. Just one small further thing. When I install SP3, the little icons indicate that the Internet is connected and it says it is, but I can't get my mail and the web pages will not load at all. This is what has happened on the laptop too after the SP3 download. I have System Restored the pc to before the SP3 download in order to send you this message.
Any clues, please?

You may have to check the Windows security settings and disable the Windows Firewall if you have your own firewall installed

Hi everyone who has been helping me with my pc problems. Since manually configuring the IP address, I (touch wood) have not had any problems. I have even downloaded SP3 successfully. What I did do though is disable the Link Scanner in AVG 8.0. It occurred to me that it might clash with McAfee Site Advisor which is a programme I rate quite highly. So far so good. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who showed so much patience. I wouldn't be without WebUser forums.
